Mercedes E240 gearbox
I've a 1998 Merc E240 with 132,000, half long disance, half heavy London traffic since new. The gearbox has just gone and needs replacing. Am I lucky, unlucky or average do you think? And could a 100mph, four hour, high speed dash (ahem, in theory), have caused the problem as it failed at the very end of the journey?
I can get it fixed with a second had box for about 1,300 inc labour. Time to sell or to repair and keep do you think? It's been serviced every 10,000 miles on the button and has never let me down. Any advice appreciated. |

You'll get better responses on the Tech forum than OD.
Your mileage is pretty low; even less if in Km's. I'd say you are VERy unlucky and recommend getting the codes read using SDS at a local dealer before replacing outright. The car's made to run at high speed; shouldn't have contributed unless cooler is clogged or was low on fluid. Trans service every 10K is pretty often. I beleive the recommended interval is now 66,000KM(?) Your trans (722.6) would only use MB's trans oil; no other equal.
