Housing market going to the dogs
Speaking of foreclosures . . . .
You could say the housing market is going to the dogs, and you'd be right in more ways than one. Not only is the real estate market in a major slump, but homeowners facing foreclosure are walking away from their homes -- leaving their dogs and other pets locked up inside. For more on this latest sign of housing market distress, read Jennifer Waters' story today on why homeowners are foreclosing on Fido, plus don't miss Realty Q&A for a look at why the housing slump may last longer than you may think (sorry, all you pets out there), and check out Marshall Loeb's Daily Money Tip on how to "rewire" your retirement, all on Friday's Personal Finance pages. Sure, I can understand that struggling homeowners, forced to move into a no-pets-allowed rental, might need to bid adieu to their four-legged friends. But leave them behind, locked up, with no one to care for them? Have you not heard of pet shelters, people? -- Andrea Coombes, assistant personal finance editor From MarketWatch

This is common in college towns, too. Every spring, when the kiddies rush home to mom & dad, many leave pets (esp. cats) behind... though usually they're not left locked indoors. It's still mind-boggling to me that anyone would do such a thing.
A couple of years ago the trend was to buy baby chicks/ducks from the local Rural King and have a pet duck until the novelty wore off and inconvenience set it. You can imagine what happens to a domesticated duck (or the ones who lived long enough to be turned out, anyway).

The results of poor breeding . . . on the part of the humans, I mean.

I remember one time getting dyed baby chicks for Easter. They were purple, blue, green, orange, etc. A dozen of them. They were really cute. And then they started to turn into actual chickens!

I saw a news story a few days ago about a woman who was fined in CO. for dyeing her dog for some event. No dyeing of aniamals there . The reasoning for the "law" according to the News was because of people buying and dyeing chicks for easter than letting them free when they were a PIA.
