Am I old school?

Am I old school?

I like computers.... Mine is super fast.... I like the concept of forums, as its cool to share information and stories with people from just about everywhere.

But, I dont like online services like Paypal, Online Bill Paying, and/or Online Banking....

I like going into my bank, and talking to a real, live person... I like paper checks, and cash moneys, as they are tangible instead of a number on a computer screen. I like sitting down, and writing checks to pay my bills. I like balancing my checkbook.... I dont know, but there is something gratifying after doing these tasks....

My dad turned 59 today, and I had a converation with him about bills, and how he pays them... I told him about my liking of the manual method, and he laughed at me and called me old school...

So, I would like to know... Am I old school...

Well you are not alone, have never trusted or done online banking even though I have worked as a programmer in the IT field. Also don't have any credit cards and mostly do cash transaction.

Bah I dislike technoligy. My cell phone is only able to call people, I don't have an Ipod, I don't have XM radio, I don't really know how to do much on computers. But I just got a digital camra! I also have N64 so thats pretty up to date.

I use a pretty small local bank for most of my banking. Chase for the rest, because they do have a good website for that.

old, but not as old school

I have been transferring to more modern methods. I'm not usually a first or even early adopter but will take on proven technologies. The convenience of electronic banking is wonderful. I can move funds between business and personal accounts at any time of night or day. I can pay bills with no stamps or trips to the post office. I can watch checkbook or credit card activity minute by minute. This came in handy when someone in the New Orleans area started debiting my account for their car payments and phone bills. In 48 hours they were caught and the $ were back in my account. If I waited a month for my paper statement who knows what they would have done.

I still like to buy CD's, but do rip them to my computer for my ipod. Same with movies. It is much more convenient to travel with.

The company I work for now transfers something in the area of $2T or more a day in electronic funds and check images. We balance to the penny every day. To borrow a Microsoft phase, I eat my own dogfood.

I have a seperate bank account for paypal, I go to the bank to cash checks, do bank things, no bills so nothing to do there. We can pay the cable bill on the TV which is cool. But if I had to pay bills I'd do it the manual way.

I'm in IT and love technology in every place but the engine compartment of my car. I do everything online, I have piles of computer parts laying around me here at my desk....I have a high tech stereo with a LCD screen and Sirius in my car....mp3 player...the works. However, I'd feel less safe (reliability-wise) driving a newer car where every rotation of the engine only takes place because 20 computers made it possible. Not a nice thought.

I will try to drive a computer-less (or very few computers) vehicle for as long as I can.

In some respects you are certainly old school. To each their own. Personally I like being able to do all my banking and credit card stuff with my laptop from the comfort of my lazyboy. Vehicularly though I'm becoming more old school by the day.

I do everything I can online out of convenience. We usually use PeaPod for groceries so that's even an EFT transaction. The only bill I can't pay online is my water bill, which is a bad thing because I rarely check my snail mail so it usually takes a couple billing cycles before it surfaces. I have direct deposit so I don't even see a paycheck. Conversely I purposely don't own an ATM/Debit card to keep the money from burning a hole in my pocket though so I need to go to the bank once or twice a week to take money out and refuse to use credit cards anymore.

The way I look at it all of my financial information is floating around in netspace anyway so I might as well use it. If some enterprising cybergeek wants access to my info. it's in some bank's system already. I've been considering something like LifeLock but haven't done it yet.

I am anti-school. Do the things that you are comfortable with, the way it makes sense to you. Fork the rest.

I write checks...

I I-bank...

I D-card gas/maintenance and sustenance...

I designed/built/work the WAN/LAN system at work (I installed the damn thing with only a MilesTech booklet as a guide...the fools!)

I have the S-10...about as new as I want to get...the Van has a brain-box "under" (it sits out in the open ) the drivers "Captain's Chair...the Mercedes is fun figuring out where the Germans were going with their thinking...and the El Camino and Yamaha are the truly "old school" rides left...if you don't count the riding lawnmowers...

But, on the other side of the fence...have you been noticing, more and more lately, that businesses are starting to phase out check-purchases? As in "As of the 1st of last month, we no longer except checks for payment..."

It seems that banks are forcing the issue onto businesses with "check cashing" waiting times, fees, penalties and the like...

I wonder if my bank will buy back all the checks I bought about a year ago if they make it so I can't pay my bills and such with those very same checks?

I doubt it...

But, back to being old school...I even keep a spare (or two) of every style of light bulb and fuse in ALL my vehicles...including the headlamps ... having a lamp available is ALOT cheaper than a ticket...you just have to ask the officer to let you put it in while he watches...

I've noticed a lot more businesses electronically processing the checks and handing them back after running them through. It might be more of a reflection on the low-brow stores I frequent than anything else.
