Question for you dapper guys
 

Jeans and tie? I do that sometimes but apparently as I've found out not too long ago online some people think it's a fashion faux pas. I never saw anything wrong with wearing a nice pair of classic Levi's 501 with a buttoned oxford with a tie and a pair of loafers (Bass, Cole Haan, or Dexter). I don't wear lowriders (do guys actually wear those?), baggy jeans, or some guady designer jeans, just straight-legged blue or black button-fly 501 jeans. I'm not big on fashion, so I must admit I feel a bit weird asking for fashion advice. I like to say that I wear what looks nice and comfortable, yet I also don't want to look tacky or sloppy in certain social settings (work, for example). We can wear jeans at work. I like the classic and casual look, and I usually prefer jeans over khakis. Sometimes I wear a tie, hence my question.

I'm no clothes-horse but I'd sooner die than wear jeans unless I'm working in the yard. Further, I think you're mixing your metaphors, dressy shirt and tie with jeans is a no-go.

Having said that, I work in an industry where my dress code includes a solid white shirt with straight collar only, no button down collars, solid navy, black or charcoal suit, dark tie, black lace up shoes(no cordovan or brown, no matter what), no fancy belt buckles, etc. Not the most creative and imaginative industry when it comes to dress, but it's what our customers expect.

I wouldn't do it, but my impression is that just about anything goes these days . . . If you do it right, it may come off looking better than some guy wearing a suit, but lacking panache. If you're good-looking to start off, you can get away with just about anything. If you're not, you're always playing catch up.

You work at a funeral home? If you don't, but want to, you won't have to go shopping for work clothes. :D


I would wear nice darker jeans with a dress shirt, but no tie, unless i had a lightweight jacket. (like that rich "redneck" in the picture below)

Then again, what you wear to work, depends on your line of work, and on the business itself. You will have to look around where you work, and decide for yourself.

Funny you mention that Larry, I work at a beautiful funeral home/cemetery/crematory facility. The dress code goes far beyond what I mentioned so far...1 ring per hand, a watch is OK, NO RED TIES, jacket MUST be buttoned in front of families, hands must not be in pockets in front of families, no sunglasses or other colored lenses. The company is very protective of their image and reputation in the community and go to great lengths to make sure we all sparkle every day.

It was the only place that I could imagine, that would have such a strict, and monotone dress code. And, for the most part, I would expect no less.

pffft.... Disney ... now thats strict...


Jeans and a tie... no. never

Look at these guys for some new trendy fashions, I think the look you are thinking of has been dead since the 80's or 90's. I think these days tie's are strictly for suit's.

I grew up in the midwest, in the 80s, so maybe this is where I got my fashion sense? Actually, I'm not about trendy, just classy or having the classic look or whatever. Okay, I guess I may have to stop this fashion montrosity of wearing jeans with a tie. Well, I still actually don't feel it's wrong, but for some reason I've become a bit self-conscious about it.

What about jeans and loafers?

I'm far from an expert, but I think if you ditch the tie your probably good.

From my limited knowledge I beleive these days jeans are casual, IE non business related.

You probably would be better off with a nice pair of designer jeans for such a look. Look through some mens fashion catalog's. I think the guys wearing jeans, button downs, and loafers are going for a different look than you are thinking. Think spiky hair, and clubbing.

I hail from the Midwest too, but as Hatterasguy said, it's a fashion holdover from the 80's-90's era.

You can still do the "Jeff Foxworthy" jacket, jeans and dress shirt, but personally, I'd swap the dress shirt for a collarless short sleeve shirt instead...
