Hip Kilts
Would you ever wear a kilt in public? I've seen Scottish men wearing kilts at Heathrow, and when we went to South Africa we also saw some Scottish men wearing kilts. I like kilts.
If I had to wear one I'd pick Iain's denim kilt, which one would you choose? http://www.21stcenturykilts.com/funkintro.htm |

I have a couple of kilts and HAVE worn them before (in college). I got lots of juvenile comments from guys, but the positive response from women was overwhelming. My kilts are traditional wool tartan, and that's the only type I'd wear in public.

My brother lived in Scotland since he was 11 and stayed there until he finished his residency. He's often seen wearing a kilt on weddings.

I wore one for my late grandfather's douche...wife's (NOT my grandmother!) daughter's wedding about 15 years ago because I was in the wedding party. The groom's family was from Scotland and they had a huge traditional ceremony that was very cool. The kilt was quite comfy and I'd probably wear one again. This is our family tartan:

I bought my family tartan kilt when I got married years ago. I pull it out for parties and occasional formal events; never ceases to initiate a conversation.
If you like the denim model, you might like Utilikilts: http://www.utilikilts.com/ Of course, the most obvious question is always asked... usually by the ladies... who are sometimes unprepared for the answer... A Scotsman clad in kilt left the bar one evening fair And one could tell by how he walked he'd drunk more than his share He staggered on until he could no longer keep his feet Then stumbled off into the grass to sleep beside the street. chorus: Ring ding diddle diddle i de o Ring di diddle i o He stumbled off into the grass to sleep beside the street. Later on two young and lovely girls just happened by, And one says to the other with a twinkle in her eye You see yon sleeping Scotsman who is young and handsome built I wonder if it's true what they don't wear beneath their kilt. Ring ding diddle diddle i de o Ring di diddle i o I wonder if it's true what they don't wear beneath their kilt. They crept up to the sleeping Scotsman quiet as could be Then lifted up his kilt about an inch so they could see And there behold for them to view beneath his Scottish skirt Was nothing but what God had graced him with upon his birth Ring ding diddle diddle i de o Ring di diddle i o There was nothing there but what God gave upon his birth They marveled for a moment then one said we'd best be gone But let's leave a present for our friend before we move along They took a blue silk ribbon and they tied it in a bow Around the bonnie spar that the Scot's lifted kilt did show Ring ding diddle diddle i de o Ring di diddle i o Around the bonnie spar that the Scot's lifted kilt did show The Scotsman woke to nature's call and stumbled toward a tree Behind a bush he lifts his kilt and gawks at what he sees Then in a startled voice he says to what's before his eyes He said, "Lad I don't know where you've been but I see you won first prize" Ring ding diddle diddle i de o Ring di diddle i o He said, "Lad I don't know where you've been but I see you won first prize" My tartan:

We were in Home Depot one day and there was a large construction worker there that was wearing a kilt that looked like it was made by Carhart (tan canvas). I looked at my youngest daughter (who is a real pistol) and saw that she was staring at him, which I knew wasn't going to be good. She proceeded to point at him at say (very loudly) "that guy is wearing a dress". Kind of an uncorfortable moment, by quite funny.

Usually one has to go to the streets of lower Manhattan to see a man in the US wearing a kilt. Strange, they often appear to be wearing eyeliner at the same time. Maybe as a tribute to the movie "Braveheart", who knows?

I think they look cool at formal functions, but don't know if I'm secure enough in my manhood to wear one. Plus, I'd have to worry about the girls trying to look up my kilt . . . .

I used to see a lot of them in Charleston, SC, when I attended First Scots Presbyterian church, which pre-dates the formation of the US. |

I'd probably tend to agree. But then again I never thought I'd be caught dead in public wearing a pair of Crocs. Maybe I'm more comfortable with my manhood than I thought.

I was part of a wedding party 4 years ago where all the ushers wore kilts. The groom was Scottish and there was a clan tartan that his family was affiliated with, so he had a kilt made for him in that tartan. The rest of us had rentals with some sort of generic tartan.
I have to agree with those who have remarked on the very positive response from the ladies. We did pictures at an outdoor park that is very popular for wedding parties and there were 3 or 4 other groups there at the same time. We had brides and bridesmaids from other wedding parties asking to have pictures done with us, and we received a lot of other very positive comments. If I was a single man and I was going to a formal function without a date, I'd definitely wear one. I can't think of anything else that compels women you don't know to inquire about your genitals.
