When I worked at an FBO in Prescott AZ, we got a call from the Sheriffs Department to keep an eye out for a stolen Cessna 310 (Remember Sky King? maybe not...) that may be heading west for CA. Big businessman turned con man, gone bad with his bank, etc. took the plane and was on the run.
That afternoon, sure enough, he shows up and wants ramp space and a shuttle to a hotel. No problem. We checked in with the registration. Sure enough it matched.

The SD wanted to just keep an eye on the guy to see if he’d hook up with any of his “partners in crime” and asked if we’d chain his props. They would stake out the plane and arrest him when he showed up to leave (probably the next morning). We said sure, but if he saw the chains when he came up, he’d probably run. They then said to go “pull the ignition or something” to keep the plane from starting. It was the “or something” that we went with.

That night (with a deputy there) we went out and unbolted (un-nutted actually) his #1 prop. Held it flush on the studs with heavy duty wire ties. Put the spinner back on, and hoped he wouldn’t do much of a preflight.
The next morning he shows up and just jumps right in. Cranks #1 and the prop went flying about 20’ out in front of the plane. He never tried #2. He never made it out of the cockpit before the Deputies were on him.

What a trashed out plane that was. We wound up buying it from the bank and making our money back on the sale of the exhaust system alone.

I sure wish I had a video of that start up and bust. YouTube material for sure.
