No Delorean for me
t was a 1981, grey interior, 5 speed, dark grey wheels(incorrect for the vin) and a sub 5k VIN car( it was a high 4000 VIN). My bank denied my loan, my friend couldn't help me because he was, ironicly just let go from his job that day, and my other friends mom had a mental fit. Sure, I'm holding $1500 in my hands right now, and all I needed was $3500 for the complete car. Heck, the torsion bar is worth $1k and the hood alone could bring in close to $1500 with the right buyer. But I was not interested in parting out a Delorean, especially this one.
This car was mint, forward of the engine compartment, frikn mint! only 20k on the odometer( the angle drive could have broken at some point though). No frame rust, no dings, no dents, no scratches. The interior was complete, just not all put together. The only stainless panel that would need replacing or work was the right rear quarter panel. It was destroyed in the accident and replaced with a panel off the "Fast and the Furious" Delorean that we all make fun of on DMCTalk.com. So, there you have it, I almost lived the dream but the dream escaped me. It is not my time yet and the right car has not found me. It shall be said, When the time comes, I will know. Chalk this up to my first one that got away from me, probably many more to come and go before I find one. I want to say my $280 that went to the Delorean Owners Association was a waste of money, but I do have an almost complete set of Delorean World magazines now that I can read over and learn torsion bar adjustments and oil changes and door adjustments before I even get my car. "Live the Dream" now I have to drive the stupid mercedes... my blog http://www.bttfblog.com/ |
TheDon- Use the money for a good laptop.....there will be many many more Delorean's in your life just not right now. I'm sorry.
|
I already bought the stupid laptop that prevented me from buying the car... damn piece of crap sony viao had to die at the wrong time...

the plan was to buy it and store it in my uncles barn until I would have been ready to work on it. $3500 for a good rolling chasis is like a deal in the delorean community... $3500 will probably buy you a complete fuel system and some small interior bits ... the stainless body panels are worth $10k in the current condition.... uhhhggghhhhhhh.. I'm going to flip through my somewhat complete collection of Delorean World magazines and then go to Target to buy some magazine holders for them all... |

What's the significance of a sub 5k VIN?

the lower the vin the better for the most part. Plus it has the hood with the grooves in it but no gas flap. I would rather have a 2000 series or a 1000 series VIN just for the grooved hood with the gas flap and the ability to say " my vin is lower than yours" but once you dip into the 900's and such things get weird. Lowest VIN is 500 which was supposedly the first car., 501 has gone missing, 502 I have sat in and is the rare factory twin turbo car. but even before those you have some pilot cars, which pilot 25 is the closest to production car pilot they made. Prototype 1 aka Proto1 was the car JZD drove to press releases and dealerships to drum up interests. That was the car we were supposed to get but instead got what we see today. I havent sat in that one since its previous owner, DMC-FL, sold it. But he kept the original tires and some other spare parts. The rear tires on it are like 265's! back onto the VIN's eagle-co94 has 16336, which in actuallity is VIN 11336, weird, yes( we found it on the drivers side door when we removed the headliner panel to look for "cave art". It was because it was made after the first closing of the plant and dmc bumped up the vins for the 83 year.... |
Yeah all the cars in the D world are referred to by the last 5 or 4 of it's VIN. I almost had #6078, an 81, many years ago ;) I'll pick one up someday.
You saw 502? cool! I have a pic of it somewhere from the Tennessee meet I played at. Just checked an early attempt at a website of mine when I was 14 or 15- it's still up! http://www.twinturbodeloreans.8m.com/ |
which car is that?
I need to upload the pics from the DMC open house that was on saturday. There was a car with 501 miles, 100% original guaranteed concourse car. IIRC its a 700 series we used it to poke and prod to find how access some bolts and stuff while it was on the lift the whole time |
oh well looks like the image got blocked, so I removed it. that was 6078.
|
6078, any idea where that ... no... wait
nvm I found 6801 the other night while James and I were dropping off the trailer he rented. Its for sale ;) |
You're lucky you didn't get it. They are cool to look at but overrated and weak in the power department.
|
Yea, not a whole lot of power...they are cool, but I think I would get bored with it. I think they are collector cars more than anything.
|
Didn't the first 200 or so have problems with the doors? Think they were made on prototype tooling instead of production tooling or something like that. Afraid the car just did not live up to the hype.

If you need a loan to buy a $5000 Delorean, then...

Good man. I'm fine with loans, but I try to keep them to a minimum. There's actually a better argument for taking a loan on a $5000 Delorean than on a $25000 anything.

That said, I'm not one to quash an aspiration like yours, which in some sense is an investment. You have an interest in Deloreans and want to purchase one as a collectors item and hobby, not because you want the neighbors to know you're on social par with them. Taking out a loan to purchase something that will likely appreciate is not irresponsible in my opinion, assuming you aren't already drowning in debt. You obviously know a lot about the cars and will make an intelligent purchase when you can. Keep saving and looking and hopefully another gem will turn up at a good price for you. |
Yeah, but think about the poor bastard at the bank who has to tell the VP that he OK'd a loan on a Delorean, and can you imagine what a fit the VP would have if that loan went sour and they had to repo it? Try running that thing through the dealer auction and watch it fall flat on its face.
My take on it is this: I don't owe money on toys...if I can't pay cash, I just wait. A neighbor of mine had one when the Deloreans were new, and it was a neat novelty piece, but he seemed to drive his 450SL more often than not. I was 16 years old, and thought that anything had to be cooler than my dad's Dodge Omni and my mom's Cutlass Supreme... |
here ya go Joe, from 2004, 502 is just sticking out in the corner of the pic. The Legend Industries single turbo D is next to that missing its grille badge. I'm on stage with the hat ;)

I have to change the title of this thread... ;)

Did you make it to the DCS event at Gettysburg in June? There were plenty of Deloreans and Bricklins. I have 2 Bricklins and my son recently purchased a Delorean.
|
nah, didn't make it
you have 2 bricklins? I've got to see some pics... I want to actually see one in person too |

I have too many cars for my sig... :p |
Don't give up man.
You could still salvage the Delorean dream by putting the $1,500 into coke and turning it over a few times... |
|
IMHO you shouldn't buy toys with loans.
Debt should only be taken on with investments, to make you money. |

Lord have mercy, cars are such a scary investment, no phyme or reason to it. Even if it appreciates significantly, the cost to keep and feed and insure a car is such that unless values go nuts like some late 60's muscle cars, it's still something you should do for fun, not to retire on.
|
buy a car as an investment?
i think we call this a rationalization.:D but don't worry, you are not alone. i remember '78? corvette indy pace cars. they were going to be like gold, right about now.:D |
pffttt.. Vettes are lame... Deloreans increase in value as the price of scrap metal goes up!!!
plus the mint left front fender is worth what I paid for the car. pics!! http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y74...20pics/004.jpg rare hood! http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y74...20pics/001.jpg http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y74...20pics/006.jpg eagle-co94 helping me out http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y74...20pics/002.jpg http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y74...20pics/003.jpg |
Are you posing or trying to hold the door up?:D
I remember a complete, but non-running Delorean was for sale here locally a few years ago for 5k. It was sitting in a Volvo dealerships back lot. It was in rough shape, but still very cool. |

Congratulations Joe!!! I thought it wasn't going to happen.
I guess intense desire always find a way.:D:D:cool: |
The Don (McFly) finds his car. Congrats. I have more respect for a car collector who owns a car because they like, OK possesed by, it. Body looks fairly straight. Looks more like interior work.
Tom |
Congratulations on purchasing the car, Don!
What the hell, you only live once, right?:) |

Bought a Delorean at 19 with cash I think I'm doing pretty well in life... lol |

I know it's probably considered blasphemy in the Delorean circles, but the painted panel prompted the question. Do painted ones show up at the shows? Are they generally shunned by the afficianados? I've always wondered what one would look like in the usual sportscar colors. |
Great Scott!
|
Now that you have it, it does look pretty cool.
What can fit in the back? Maybe a Ford 289 with some trick internals that will run to 8k?:D |

I'm just going to go with a factory motor. Delorean Parts North West has a few used engines for sale. $750 plus freight, working at a place with a loading dock is awesome. I'll just clear it with my boss and bam... the truck comes and I have an engine. Compare the price of a good used engine to that of a NOS crate engine with a stage II upgrade from DMC, which runs $8k... pffft... I will have a nice running delorean for under 10k when I am done. The engine was one of the other large parts to buy but now that I know I can get used I have no issues. The torsion bar and right rear quarter panel are my only big pieces. The torsion bar will run me anywhere from $800 to $2k and the panel I can get NOS for about $950. Also, my mom is going to let me put it in our garage so now I can work on it when I please. It will be kept out of the weather.. :) happy days |
What are your future plans for it?
|
I thought that was just the PRV v-6, couldn't you just grab an old Volvo 760 and snag the engine?
