Toyotas....

I know their gutless wonders, but which one is better?

Sequoia

4-Runner

My boss needs to buy a new car for his wife, and I am just wondering which one would be a better choice....

I don't hear much about Sequoias. I hear nothing but good about 4-Runners, and by the number of people asking about them at the junk yard, there seem to be an awfull lot of old ones still running around.

A Sequoia is far from gutless. I've had Tundras, Sequoias, Land Cruisers, 4 Runners t-100's. All I can say is all of them are top notch.......and I put the Sequoia over the Land Cruiser for every day use.

Just some random musings:

The GF had a '94 4 runner - truly gutless but very nice, reliable, tough. My buddy has a newer 4 runner like the one pictured. It's a V8, moves out nicely, has lots of cool gadgets. Seating position on 4 runners is somewhat unusual for a truck. You pretty much sit on the floor, Corvette style with your legs essentially out srtaight. The Tundra/Seq. is about the same size as the 4 runner but the Tundra is of a certain height that I find akward to get into - not tall enough and not short enough. I don't have the same problem with the 4 runner.

GF now has a '04 Tundra V8. More truck like seating position, soft suspension, super high quality construction as in other Toy's. Moves out pretty will with the 245 some HP. Newer Tundra's have 275HP and I assume that carried over to the Seq's as well but you 'll need to check the exact specs.

Expect 14/18 MPG for both. V6 is available and IIRC, actually has more HP than V8 but less Tq. V6 is probably OK for most folks and may get better mileage. I've been driving the Tundra for about 3 weeks now while I'm working on the E300 and it's eating me alive in gas...

I have a V6 Tundra, 2wd, auto. Nothing fancy, smooth ride, decent power. 15 mpg local, maybe 20 highway. Thats with a light foot. Change the oil/filter, that's it.

My wife has owned a 4-Runner, a Sequioa, and the LX470 (LandCruiser). The LandCruiser was the best of the three, but it drove like an overweight manatee. The Sequoia was just downright boring - I hated driving that one. The 4-Runner was as reliable as the LX (the Sequoia, not perfect), it was fast, and it held everything well.

If money no object, get the LandCruiser - if money an object, get the 4-Runner. If you love an overstuffed Camry SUV, buy the Sequoia.

Talked to the bossman, and he and his wife like the Sequoia. The space is nice, and the ride is excellent.

The dealer is also making him a better deal on a Sequoia than on a 4 Runner, so looks like its going to the Sequoia.

Still taking input though. The Land Cruiser is pretty much out, they want an arm, leg, as well as a child for those.

iwrock,

gutless wonders? ha!

well, ill temper that with "not all of them"

i run (w/ some other folks) a very large toyota truck and suv forum, ultimateyota.com in terms of what to buy, like all cars, it depends. the sequoia is more comfy, but its a big vehicle like the LCs. sequoias are made in the US, LCs and 4runners are both made in japan (a big plus in my book)

if you want the best of all worlds, imho, get the 4th gen 4runner with the v8. if they want a more stable ride, get the one with x-reas (stabilizing system). if he does any sort of offroading though, dont get x-reas. you have to remove xreas to lift it. the v6 is a great engine too, but avoid the 03-04s as they had a ticking issue with them which was not recalled TMS, Gulf States toyota, or the SE toyota franchise (forget what its called).

If you don't have far to drive every day, either of them could be a great deal and save money v. buying a sedan. SUV prices are depressed. The money you save will buy a lot of fuel. If, in addition, your long trips require space, it's a winner.

We bought a Jetta recently. With diesel fuel at $4 per gallon, it can be expected to cost just under $9k for fuel to go 100K miles. That is a small fraction of the purchase price of the vehicle. Disregarding the insane resale value of this particular car, it would be cheaper to buy the gas model. Of course, I am always thinking of selling it.

If I werent a Mercedes person, I would probibally be a Toyota truck/SUV person.

Tundras are bad@ss.

His wife drives a Dodge Durango now, so there should not be a huge difference in terms of MPG.

Hes also gotta get the V8 to pull his boat and his trailer for dirt bikes.

He is iffy on 4WD, although he said it would be nice to have for when to takes the bikes out, or if he goes skiing.

He found a really nice 05 Sequoia Limited (I think?) 4WD for just under 21k. Its at Toyota, and has a 100k mile extended warranty. He just needs to offload the Durango.

I suppose if I had to have a truck I'd have a Toyota one, the American offerings are far less impressive.
