I cant get over the price of Diesel Mercedes

I am looking to buy another car for my summer home in Florida and am sick of the crappy rental cars. I looking to get a Mercedes Diesel this summer or next when we go back down. Something for about $10,000. Me not knowing the price of Diesel Benzes latly became shocked when looking at some. The wife and I have looked at the W210 E300TD because the W210 is a great car. To show you what I mean have a look at some of the cars I looked at.
1997 E300 for $9,200- IT HAS 214K ON IT! http://autos.yahoo.com/used-cars/mercedes_benz-e_class-cars136584375?keywords=Diesel&sortcol=price&sortdir=up&askpriceub=10000&askpricelb=any&deliverymileageub=any&deliverymileagelb=any&location=Saratoga+Springs%2C+NY+12866&listingtype=used&model=e_class&make=mercedes_benz&distance=any

even this one here is a 1995 E300 that has only 94k on it. That not even broken in yet but there asking $10,000. ITS A 1995! http://autos.yahoo.com/used-cars/mercedes_benz-e_class-cars136563013?keywords=Diesel&sortcol=price&sortdir=up&start=16&askpriceub=any&askpricelb=any&deliverymileageub=any&deliverymileagelb=any&location=Saratoga+Springs%2C+NY+12866&listingtype=used&model=e_class&make=mercedes_benz&distance=any

You'd probably be better off with the '95. Compared to the newer chassis, they are still built like brick outhouses. $10k for a car with only 94k miles, is not a bad deal. Yeah, maybe it's a couple of years older...but the 124 chassis is the last chassis that aged slower than the average car chassis - So in effective age, it is probably newer.

I paid $480 for my '77. Of course I had to put a slave cylinder in it, followed by a starter (which failed under warranty and had to be replaced AGAIN), as well as a windshield, since the state I live in is hard on those. Other than that, it's been relatively trouble free.

My '83 was a whole $800.

I bought mine (E300D, 47K miles) locally from a lady with Alzheimer's ..... $8,000.

Okay, it wasn't THAT evil. Her daughter was selling her mom's stuff and I lucked into the deal.

I'd be quite pleased with $10,500.00 for my '98 E300 with 165K.

Now I know you don't live in Michigan. Everybody know that "Cold Hard Cash" comes out of a New Orleans freezer.

Google Jim Smith. IIRC he has a tale of horror and woe. Something about the piston cylinders becoming oval and then the engine self-destruction. Doubtlessly somebody remembers the whole thing.

I drove one once a few years ago with a 100k miles. It was a great ride with surprising acceleration. I searched the diesel forum and found Smith's discussion. As I recall, his opinion is not universally shared. Then I also tried parking it in my little garage. 6 inches! Damn!
