A routine traffic stop on an upstate New York interstate (I90) turned into a shootout Saturday after police say a man riding in a taxicab opened fire on a state trooper.Brown was taking a taxi from Hartford to an undisclosed location in the Capital District when the taxi was pulled over for speeding at about 11:55 a.m. on the eastbound side of the highway near Exit 10, police said. As the officer was talking with Brown, the only passenger, and the taxi driver, who was not named, Brown produced an assault rifle and fired at the trooper
The alleged shooter was hospitalized with gunshot wounds Saturday evening, as police kept a stretch of Interstate 90 in East Greenbush outside of Albany closed for hours while they investigated the scene.
Shell casings were strewn on both sides of the highway, and at least one civilian's car was hit by a bullet, according to Capital News 9.
State police weren't providing details about the incident, except to say that the suspect was shot and in police custody.
Witnesses described a chaotic scene as a large contingent of state and local police responded to the area at around noon.
Rensselaer County District Attorney Richard McNally told the Albany Times Union that a county SWAT team that had been training nearby shot the man, who had fled from the cab into the woods.No police were shot, and no other injuries were reported.One driver said what started with a traffic delay turned into terrified motorists and passengers fleeing from the gunfire. Some backed up, others crossed the snowy median to go in the other direction, and others left their vehicles and ran, he said.The driver told the Times Union he was stuck in traffic when heard the shots and thought police might have been euthanizing a bear. Then he saw people starting to get out of their cars.Devin McKeon, who was returning from the Berkshires with his wife, told the paper they heard 'a volley of shots' and then saw people running.'It was pretty frightening,' he said.East Greenbush Town Supervisor Rick McCabe told the Times Union that police told him the alleged gunman traveled to New York in a cab from Connecticut.

That Exit 10. I am just 2 Exits north of that. Less then 10 miles away.

How did he hide and "produce" an assault rifle? You can't exactly stick an M16 or AK47 in your back pocket.

Crazy people though, that would suck getting caught in that, no where to go if your stuck in traffic.

Kind of makes a good case for having a Guard S class if you can afford it

Heck if you had the S Guard you could sit there all day and sip some wine and look out the window as the gun shots fly and the people run.

Just an opinion, if many more things happen like this train platform shooting of a young guy, who appeared to be handcuffed, and the cop walks away with a slap on the wrist, it will become a war with civilians against police. Kind of in this manner, you kill one of ours, we'll kill 10 of yours.
An unfortunate, but very possible reality.

Just an opinion, if many more things happen like this train platform shooting of a young guy, who appeared to be handcuffed, and the cop walks away with a slap on the wrist, it will become a war with civilians against police. Kind of in this manner, you kill one of ours, we'll kill 10 of yours.

Of course its another nut from Hartford....i'm just wondering how much worse things could have turned out if he actually reached his destination?

There weren't any details so i'm guessing it was probably a SMG, you know how the media always messes up the important little details like that. If it goes bang more then once, its instantly a "Machine Gun"

Kind of like Greece. If I'm not mistaken, people did protest and cause property damage, over the BART thing, or the New Orleans one. Unfortunately, it'll be a while until Americans get their balls and brains back and destroy the right property.

This whole thing is pretty scary. My house is in New Paltz, which is not that far from Albany. The NYS Thruway seems to attract this kind of thing. A few years ago there was a shoot out near Newburgh when a guy from the Bronx got into a beef with somebody on the highway.

I was scared for my wife when I left to go to WV and had to leave her in the house up there by herself. Good thing she is Southern and can handle a 12 gauge

That's exactly my point. If you have a problem with the government, wouldn't it make sense to go after government property? I never understood the "march through your own neighborhood setting things on fire" mentality. I actually think more can be accomplished at this point through peaceful means but, time is quickly running out.

So you are saying that this guy is justified in opening up on a cop?

I didn't say that I wanted this to happen, what I was saying is that you can only push so hard on a group of people before they push back, and a bloody war starts. History backs up my statement.
I don't justify what he did, but isn't it just a little like the beginning of the Revolutionary war??

No, it's nothing like the beginning of the Revolutionary War. What "group" of people is being pushed about in this story?
