And that's 2-d.

Change "130 mph" to "55 mph" on a typical 2 lane...........same question........same result.

Could you be more precise?

Why?
I think I was precise enough with the rest of my post.

And I think BC covered anything you where looking for anyway.
(Thanks Brian)

Yep.

And then toss a deer into the equation. You think just because you’re eyes are looking out the windshield that you wont hit a deer?

I wonder how many car wrecks either with other cars or with animals, there have been that the driver either said: “I only looked down for a second.” Or: “It all happened so fast.” Or: “The deer just came out of nowhere.”

I'm thinking more than not.

The average moron will be exactly as stated above........

But, the supreme retards will make the comment, "The telephone pole came out of nowhere"...........

LOL :D (with you. not at.)

Seeing as todays turbofan engines are just that. Turbine powered fans. The amount of oxygen the engine gets isnt the issue. It's all about the air that doesn’t go through the turbine. Most bypass ratios these days are in the 5:1 or higher range.

Well, uhhh . . . my knowledge of jet engines is pretty limited (not that you could tell).

I remember the inventor of the jet thinking that perhaps just the rush of air from combustion could provide as much or more thrust than using the same fuel to turn a propeller.

I don't imagine the early jet engines were nearly as advanced as current ones in the 'fan' dept. That would be a no-brainer actually. When I'd see pictures of the a modern jet engine's innards, I thought perhaps the fans were a sort of supercharger to get sufficient oxygen to provide enough combustion to provide thrust.

I'm guessing that's partly right but that there's more going on than that.

I’m thinking that your experience hasn’t involved spending much time in the cockpit of a turbine powered aircraft doing 200+mph at altitudes where birds fly.

Avoiding a bird strike is not nearly as easy as watching where you're going.

I'm thinking that it would be about as easy as avoiding having an insect hit your windshield in a car. By the time you see them, whoops, done been struck/sucked up.

**EDIT** An insect struck by your car going 60-70 mph. IOW, about impossible.

Given the information that BC provided, the Zn of the sun would have been 253*. (Assuming that "45 degrees off the left side" means 315* relative.) Do you concur with that?

WVOtoGO 01-20-2009 10:01 PM

I’m at a loss for where you may be going with all this.

If you’re going to tell me that they should have seen the geese coming and done something to avoid the strike. I’m going to say: Well obviously they didn’t. And right now, we have no idea where the geese came from other than from eggs. Nor what was going on in the cockpit, other than it was busy.

As for the Zn and such of the sun at time of ingestion. If BC says it’s so, Then I’ll go with that. He’s a pretty smart guy.

As for me... I just fly the damn things and hope that I don’t hit something I shouldn’t in the process.

I predict that the NTSB investigation will reveal that the flight crew of Cactus 1549 did see the formation of geese in advance and, in theory, had an opportunity to take evasive action.

Botnst 01-21-2009 12:29 AM

In theory a bumblebee shouldn't fly.

Cockpit tape recording:

"... duck duck goose, duck duck goose, duck duck GOOSE!..."

Yep. You’re probably right.

And the psychological evaluations of said crew will reveal that they both show extreme suicidal tendencies.

Botnst 01-21-2009 07:30 AM

... and it's ultimately Bush's fault.

dynalow 01-21-2009 11:24 AM

The NTSB released this picture today. Based on their preliminary investigation, they think they have a good idea what caused the USAir ditching last week.
