A chick I dated worked on her 16 valve.

kerry 01-19-2009 02:13 PM

No.

Wonder how much being unable to work on one's own car contributes to women's relative poverty?

my 10yr-old cousin guided me through the removal of my rear axle and caliper on a 1994 integra.

I was like... "thanks?.... that was pretty easy, huh?"
she is now 16 and not working on cars, but terribly misguided in my opinion.

DJ and Shelby both have A&P tickets and do most of the work on their autos as well. As for professional auto mechanics, I don't recall any right off hand.

On average, they make better pilots, so making good mechanics doesn’t come as any surprise.

Roy I guess this is a qualifying answer. Yes, I know a gal that has a degree in Automotive Engineering and works at the Nissan Plant here. Not just a line worker but works on the research side of the house. She is a 100% gear head.

I tried to teach my daughters everything I know about cars and taking care of them. Unfortunately, that wasn't a whole lot, but maybe it will help keep them from being taken advantage of when having someone else do the repairs. Hopefully, their BS detectors will work well.

I owned a '73 MGB that was previously maintained by a woman mechanic, who also owned the shop, so we nicknamed the car after her, "Jackie."

What? I don't even know where to start on that ...

To answer the original question, I see a lot of women who work at auto shops, but usually at the desk ... not as secretaries or anything, but I don't know of any personally who actually work in the garage as a career. Probably most women who are into mechanics do it as a hobby ... I see that a lot.

I've given serious consideration to taking some courses and doing something mechanic-related. I hate my job, and the only thing I really have any enthusiasm over anymore is cars. I know it isn't a glamor job and my family would probably find it "lowbrow," but who knows.

My daughter is a 'Girlie Gearhead'. She had helped me do brake jobs, tune ups, and other jobs on the cars. She also does work on the house replacing light switches, faucet repairs and so on...

At the moment, no.

When I worked at Firestone there was one who worked at a different store. Over in Iraq I met a female CM (Construction Mechanic) who actually turned wrenches. Female CM's are quite rare and most of those end up in desk jobs for one reason or another.

.

Please start somewhere. I know I've saved tens of thousands of dollars by doing my own repair work over the years. I also know female relatives who have sold cars with minor problems because they didn't know how to fix them, didn't trust mechanics because they didn't know enough about cars to pass judgment on someone else's diagnosis and ended up spending lots of $$ on new car payments when a small investment of labor in their old car would have gone a long way.
I have no idea of actual figures but I guess that the millions of dollars saved by people doing their own auto repairs every year provides far more benefits to men than to women.

Throughout my career I've worked with probably 2 or 3. None at a MB dealer though. When I was off in Houston in training once I remember seeing a girl in one of MB's "Elite" training classes.

Dee8go 01-19-2009 08:48 PM

Efete training classes?
