BTW this transition of power didn't really hit me until I started reading in the news "President Barack Obama" and "Former President George W Bush". That sounds kind of weird (in a pleasant way). I'm sure I'll get used to it!

I wandered around Indendence Mall (Philly) today doing the tourist thing and caught a re-enactment of the peaceful transfer of power from Washington to Adams in Congress Hall, pretty apropos.
Far less pomp and circumstance, though.

Why shouldn't it be peaceful? The power never changes hands, only the faces change.

Now that's a very good point. Almost got lost in the wistfulness of it all.

This is PART of what I meant by "Savor the moment"
Judge Obama on Performance Alone
By JUAN WILLIAMS With the noon sun high over the U.S. Capitol, Barack Obama yesterday took the oath of office to become president of the United States. On one level, it was a simple matter of political process -- the symbolic transfer of power. Yet words alone cannot convey its meaning. The calloused hands of slaves, the voices of abolitionists, the hearts of generations who trusted in the naïve promise that any child can become president, will find some reward in a moment that was hard to imagine last year, much less 50 years ago. Our history, so marred by the sin of slavery, has come to the day when a man that an old segregationist would have described as "tea-colored" -- the child of a white woman and an African immigrant, who identifies as a member of the long oppressed and despised black minority -- was chosen by a mostly white nation as the personification of America's best sense of self as a nation of power and virtue. more at: http://online.wsj.com/article/SB123249791178500439.html?mod=googlenews_wsj Juan Williams hits the target dead-on. Remember that the power rests with the people. If you (anybody) think that the parties rig the contest, then either get your ass deep into party politics OR vote 3rd party.
You waste your energy and other folks' time by complaining and playing along. |

Today was a fine day.
Today was the first day in the history of the USA that the United States showed the world it truly supports equality. We know that the USA is the proverbial melting pot. I bet most of the readers live in neighborhoods which are home to the decedents of many nations. The events of today spoke with clarity to all. Perhaps our neighborhoods will work to support needed change elsewhere, as they have done by helping to elect a president that is a unique departure from the status quo. Opening the door to change is why today was a fine day. |

We could have had a military coup de etat and that would have been a greater change than electing Mr Obama. Go read Williams' op/ed that I linked to above. He properly explained both the promise & responsibilities associated with Obama. The rest is just irrational exuberance. |
