Killer Queen
Is Queen's Killer Queen about a historical figure? A popular figure? Mistress?

Killer Queen Lyrics
She keeps Moet et Chandon, in her pretty cabinet Let them eat cake she says, just like Marie Antoinette A built in remedy, for Khrushchev and Kennedy At anytime an invitation, you can't decline Caviar and cigarettes Well versed in etiquette Extraordinarily nice She's a Killer Queen Gunpowder, gelatine Dynamite with a laser beam Guaranteed to blow your mind Anytime, ooh Recommended at the price Insatiable an appetite Wanna try? To avoid complications She never kept the same address In conversation, she spoke just like a baroness Met a man from China, went down to Geisha Minah Then again incidentally, if you're that way inclined Perfume came naturally from Paris For cars she couldn't care less Fastidious and precise She's a Killer Queen Gunpowder, gelatine Dynamite with a laser beam Guaranteed to blow your mind Anytime Drop of a hat she's a willing as Playful as a pussy cat Then momentarily out of action Temporarily out of gas To absolutely drive you wild, wild.. She's all out to get you She's a Killer Queen Gunpowder, gelatine Dynamite with a laser beam Guaranteed to blow your mind Anytime, ooh Recommended at the price Insatiable an appetite Wanna try? You wanna try ***************** In the New Musical Express November 2, 1974, the song's writer Freddie Mercury elucidates on this song: "It's about a high class call girl. I'm trying to say that classy people can be whores as well. That's what the song is about, though I'd prefer people to put their interpretation upon it - to read into it what they like."

The total musical images attached to the song make it so interesting that I never gave the words much thought. The enjoyment of the musical presentation was so complete.....
The words do leave a lot to the imagination. Often thats the case in really good songs. Dylan did a lot of that and Paul Simon as well.

"Real poetry doesn't say anything, it just ticks off the possibilities."
- Jim Morrison Which simply means that good poetry isn't precise enough for the reader to know what the author was thinking - what makes poetry interesting is that ten people will read the same thing and give you ten answers about what it means, and that says more about what's in the ten reader's minds than what's in the author's.

That's modern poetry, modern lyrics.
Looking back at traditional poetry one finds a rather easily discernible theme that is described through metaphor, word play and sound to dramatize the central theme. Poetry was once a very popular and well-used form of communication recognized for it's ability to convey information in a memorable, sensuous fashion. Few people not experts in modern poetry read modern poetry today. Except horribly abused students. This is not unlike what has happened to symphonic music. |

It is my view that words can be meaningful without referring to an object, and that they can get their meaning even without an initial object.

Emotion is to art as passion is to sex.
Art that communicates to the self without a theme common to all is like sex alone. It's gratifying in a way. But for me, not entirely satisfying. |
