Anyone not like the way they sound?
I'm becoming more aware that i do not like the way I talk. I never did think I had a good voice, weird considering that I majored in English. People have this perception that Enlish majors are eloquent and speak with great distinction, that they generally like to talk. I wish I could only talk the way I write sometimes (I don't mean internet writing :P). In real life I don't like to talk much because I think I sound horrible if not unpleasing to the ears. Ever heard a recording of yourself? Ugh! I cringe and say is that me? I wish I spoke with more distinction and authority. Love the rico suave low bass tone that some people have. My voice is almost nasal sometimes. I grew up in a Chinese-speaking household and having lived in Oklahoma in my early years doesn't help much. A bit of a Chinese accent with a touch of midwestern twang doesn't sound right.

I like the way I sound...
I used to deejay the late night "slow jams" program on the college station many years ago...required a deep, calming, soothing voice to do that effectively.
Coupled with "Toastmasters" and other early efforts at public speaking practices, presentations I give at work are pretty successful. Now my "singing" voice? That's a whole different story... |
Definately! I heard old recordings of myself throughout my life and I can't stand the sound of my own voice. Lately, It's pretty bad because I'm shooting a series of "how to" videos here at work.
It does give some perspective though snce I have to do the editing, I'm learning to train my voice to sound more professional. PS - G's got the Barry White thing goin' on! |
It's really a question of delivery, how one enunciates and stresses words rather than the timbre of your voice which can be altered with practice.
Listening to your voice is an excellent way to start if you really have any doubts but then most people are highly sensitive about the impressions others form of them. |
I should add that I think I sound a bit soft, almost sissy-ish? I dunno. Not good!
Many years ago I had a girl tell me that she loved my voice and that I had a cool accent or something. What? |
I can't stand the way I sound, either. Of course, I like the way I look in the mirror better than the way I look in pictures. I guess cameras and tape recorders are much more objective that our self-perceptions are.
I guess that you could modify the way you speak considerably, depending upon how much time and effort you were willing to put into it. |
I also wish I had a lot more money . . . .

If Mike Tyson can do it, you can too LOL.

I was in radio for 20 years. Still strange to hear my voice. I still do professional voice overs on an infrequent basis. When I do the big money ones, I wear headphones so I can enunciate each word as best I can. Here's a recent one I did in one take for work. I'm doing the lead voice.

Anything beats Bryant Gumbel.:D
That dude would not last 5 minutes in the hood.....sorry that was bad, but I know you laughed.....almost. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KpDf83l6z4c Here's Bryant and Barak trying to size eachother up. but you gotta admit it's funny to see Brant's facial expressions. |
I can hear your voice in that since you said it was you, but I'd never have recognized your voice had you not said it was you. That's impressive.

Given the choice between my voice and the one in the following clip, I'd stick with mine: :D
