London UK pub advice

I'll be in London UK April 6-13 (business trip) and will have a few days to goof off. I have a sightseeing agenda, however, if anybody has any info on interesting pubs I am open for ideas.

A friend suggested the Olde Cheshire Cheese and I may stop by the Microbar to check out their selection of Belgian ales.

Not really a pub recommendation, but if you go to the Maritime Museum in Greenwich (and it's worth a trip just to straddle 0 degrees and see Harrison's clocks), there's a little restaurant not too far away near the tube stop that specializes in eels. I didn't go for the eels but it was a nice old traditional English working class eatery. It's on your left as you exit the tube heading for the museum, tucked in a corner. Sorry, I can't remember it's name.

not sure what you're looking for.. but if you prefer to retain your chances of making successful advances on women after you've already puked your face out..
consider THE CHURCH.

I am not sure you can go wrong with any pub in London. Drink the Guinness and for sure have some shepherd's pie.

THE CHURCH.
Is this really the name of a pub or is the statement just a general recommendation?

I have heard in the UK they make good drinks, IE a Gin and tonic is mostly Gin with a splash of tonic. Not the wuss drinks we make over here with one shot.

From my friend Samantha who is always gasping for a drink:

"So, pubs in London. Have your friend start here: http://www.pubs.com/home.cfm and http://www.classiccitybrew.com/london07.html and http://www.camra.org.uk/. I personally would recommend trying these:

The Rules Covent Garden (pub and restaurant, latter requires booking in advance), Gordons Wine Bar underneath the arches at Embankment tube, The Trafalgar (Greenwich), Captin Kidd (Wapping), The Prospect of Whitby (Wapping).

But to be honest there are loads all around and you can get some really nice good pubs in to an evening with a simple crawl over a matter of a few corners! The CAMRA site is good for crawls and is focused on quality pubs too."

HAVE FUN!!!

Thanks LUVMBDiesels, the CAMRA site is a good resource as it provides top rated pubs by area. Cheers!!!

Lucky!!!! I want to go back. I don't remember going to any pubs in London, but I do remember bars in Paris. I got so drunk off Kronenbourg, I got lost on the way back to the hotel. I had to pee real bad too.

England is the cradle of the industrial revolution and therefore has some of the best mechanical museums on the world. It also has great war and car museums.

The Kensington museum in London has the original steam engine and loads of steam engine paten models.

Pubs are a dime a dozen and all are about the same. Many cater to the young crowd but if you go farther out from the center of the city you get more what the Brits call 'locals'. As in any big city there are areas where you might not want to go. The easiest way to find out is just to ask someone. If you express the slightest interest in seeing a local the chances are good that that person will want to take you to his local. There you will probably be treated to the local brew and regaled with stories about the Yanks and WWII.

For God's sake don't tell them that ANYTHING is better in the States. Just enjoy the company, the teasing, and the beer. You are a guest, so listen and learn.
