Getting an '82 240D Painted

Hello all! Clay is laid up in the hospital, got a bad case of the flu that attacked his heart, etc. - very scary stuff, but is on his way to recovering, here's my question.

As a surprise I would like to get his 240D repainted. It is actually in pretty good shape, just oxidized a bit all over, needs to be redone. I already know of a reputable body shop that we used to get my 220 repaired, but want to make sure I tell the body shop all the right things about how I want it done. My husband is a detail guy, but it is an '82 so I don't want to go overboard. Any helpful suggestions of how to talk with the body shop would be greatly appreciated.

Deborah

I believe each of these cars are the final production year for that model.

Deborah, you are a catch!

Do yourself a favor if hes a picky son of a gun (like me) and get him a gift certificate at his favorite body shop and let him work out the details himself!

You'll both be happier that way!

Okay now that the surprise has been revealed, and it was still a nice surprise to tell him I was thinking of doing it and that I consulted with his buddies on the forum, he said to write you and ask what you think would be a reasonable price to get this done. This car has no rust so no rust repair necessary. Just a ballpark would be great!! - Deborah

It depends on the quality he wants. If he wants a full window out job, $5k plus. If he's looking for a nice driver quality paint job where they don't pull the windows and some of the trim, maybe $3k. This can still look great if they are very meticulous on getting the masking marks as tight as possible.

I've had several painted at Maaco for 5 t0 800 with minimal body work and me removing the side trim myself. No change in color, so no need to paint door edges etc.

The maaco paint is good for about three years in this climate before beginning to dull again. I imagine you could get a small time body shop to do a job using decent paint for 1500 to 2000.

I am not all that picky though, perfection is not necessary for me. I just want a decent looking daily driver, not a show car.

Which paint are you using from them? Their enamel job may be like that, but I thought their 2 stage paint was as good as the real shops, if prepped properly.

it was about the third step up from their cheapest paint, IIRC. The two part paint is pretty good, eh?
