Why?

Sometimes I feel like I woke up in a different country, nay a different world

Why shouldn't the owner or supervisor have COMPLETE control over the workplace, Jake?

I hope that you are joking, esp regarding a supervisor. in any case, who in America should be offended by the flag of their country?

I'm not joking. Does the supervisor have control over the workplace, or does he not? Or does he have control, except when it's about a flag? What rules would you like?

Sorry but simple office rules if someone finds something offensive you will be asked to take it down. I am not saying its right but that is how it is. No employer is going to risk a law suit for "offending" someone. No different than having an NRA sticker and someone asks you to take it down.

I'm morally and emotionally on your side on this one--but think about it--there are certain religious conflicts (just to point out one problem) about a symbol that get all fouled up in the BoR. The Supreme Court cases have outlined the issues pretty well and the Jehovah's Witnesses don't have to stand up for the Pledge in 3d grade.

Would I knock the **** out of a flag-burner if no one was looking? Maybe.......
Does the guy have a right to do it? Your answer depends on which Amendment you value the highest.

I dare anyone to remove MY flag. I had this same situation happen to me in the early-mid '90's. The shop supervisor said that it needed to be removed and I told him to fly a kite. He took it down, and the president of the company fired him for "just cause". i placed my flag back into position (3" X 5") on top of my toolbox, and was presented a new larger one by the company president as well as an apology.

In this case, the president agreed with you and not with the supervisor. The supervisor was then not following the wishes of his own supervisors.

I am saying that this is a property-rights case, and you are all trying to make it about patriotism. Here's a clue: that you insist on displaying a flag at work doesn't make you any more patriotic. In fact, it makes me think that you're trying too hard to compensate.

What size Flag do you use to cover up the triple D's?

It was not her office.

"Last week, she hung a three-by-five foot American flag in the office she shares with the other supervisors."

And she did not ask anyone that shares the office with her.

Rampant nationalism does not make a patriot.
It makes you rampant.

Empty gestures are just that, empty.

Txjake 05-27-2009 11:59 AM

It is an American flag, not like she was hanging a Power Rangers poster or such....just the flag of our country. How could anyone object to that? Maybe I am just stupid.....

RichC 05-27-2009 12:19 PM

It would not make a difference what the item she placed in the room was.

It is the fact that she shared the room with others and did not seek their approval.

The only reason this became a story is because it ilicits a response from people
who are driven by base emotions.

Txjake 05-27-2009 12:21 PM

I don't consider commemorating the dead of war and demonstrating love of country base emotions.

I'm not a lawyer, but I think legally, the hospital administration was within their rights. However, from a PR perspective, it was a really boneheaded thing to do, especially in Texas.
