An old Dell computer with a CRT monitor, 1988 IBM keyboard is a good theft deterrent for dorms. Also watch out for the people who go down dorm halls trying every door (to find an unlocked one to steal stuff from) they'll say they thought this was their floor/room, etc.

Can't go wrong with a desktop (with a nice, full size keyboard) for writing papers at the dorm, a netbook for library and lecture hall use.
