Who likes Janis Joplin?

I saw a show last night about Janis Joplin and had forgotten what a powerful, soulful voice she had. There were interviews inserted in between footage from her shows, and it sounds like she had a lot of pain in her life. I guess that's what she was drawing on to get that emotion in her music.

I think she was pretty rough around the edges, but Me and Bobby Mcgee, is still one of my favorites.

OOH OOH Mee mee mee!!

I have always loved Janis... Her voice is just dripping with soul. She might not be the best singer out there, but it is real raw emotion.

She is the reason I bought my first CD player and she was my first CD. I heard her on CD and had to get a new system...

Check out her performance in "Woodstock" for a great example.

There was a DVDl about Big Brother I saw a few years back. It was very cool.

My dog’s dad would always go into a howl every time he would here Janis Joplin.
My dog only goes in to a howl when he hears the song American Woman.
And yes Janis Joplin could tear it up.

While I recognize JJ as a talented, emotional singer, that type of singing has never appealed to me. I tend to be touched more by tonal harmonys or technical perfection than a soulful delivery.

From a technical standpoint, I have an appreciation for the words that are sung but they never have the same impact on me as the rhythm and melody.

I actually prefer Fiona Apple who's style is similar but she comes across technically superior yet still delivers with emotion.

One of the first singers to really reach deep down inside my gut and move me, and still one of my all time favorites. Hard to name a single favorite, but some that come to mind at this particular moment

Piece of My Heart - off Cheap Thrills. I remember the first time I heard it on the radio (first Janis exposure).

Summertime and Ball & Chain - off Live at Winterland

All is Loneliness - off Big Brother and the Holding Company

Get it While You Can (with Full Tilt Boogie) - off In Concert

Trouble in Mind - from The Typewriter Tape

My affection for Janis grew even stronger when Darling Wife (who was then just a really, really interesting person posting on a roadster forum) made comments about how much honesty Janis poured into her music...... I replied saying the she was WAY too young for her taste in music - and our relationship was built from there.

I really like her older stuff.
Like, pre October 1970.
Anything after that. Not so much.

Couldn't have said it better myself. She just a little on the "raw" side for me. I'd rather listen to old soul records if that's the sound I'm after. I have a box of Stax 45's I picked up at a pawn shop years ago that get played one after the other once in a while for just that purpose.

Yeah, I like Taj Mahal a lot, too.

I heard a song by Joss Stone a few years ago and thought she sounded like she had captured a lot of that raw emotion like Janis did. Haven't heard anything else by her, though.

White Rabbit is perfect.

And yeah, as I recall, she got screwed over by a few people in her life.

Uhm. Well. Is a wonderful song.

Gots nothing at all to do with Janis.

Another of my all time favorite ladies of rock made that one what it is.

Try googling Grace Slick. Get past the radio played stuff, and find yourself a copy of Sunfighter (Grace and Paul Kantner). Look at the Wood is a good track to start with.
