Niagara Falls power stations
I have relatives coming to visit Niagara Falls so I thought I would read up. I believe many of you will enjoy reading some history on the power stations there. Some amazing stuff . http://www.niagarafrontier.com/power.html#Origins

What I found interesting is that the Falls were "discovered" by white sailors on lake Erie ( I think) who heard them. As impressive as the Falls are today, how much more impressive were they before so much water was diverted for electrical power generation?

Have to wonder how many floated down river to find the location of the "noise" and just went alittle too far.

Having the flow reduced actually saves the falls. Erosion is a huge problem for the falls and IIRC the ledge creeps backs over 10' per year when the falls are at full blast.

There's a poster on the wall of the "Behind the Falls" tour that told a story of an 11 year old boy (maybe younger) that went over the falls by accident while on an inner tube. He was boating with family when the accident happened and he survived. This also was before the flow of the falls got reduced so I imagine he was thrown out further than the rocks.

A canoeist in a C-1 deliberately paddled over the Canadian falls about 15 yrs ago thinking that he could run them and survive. He didn't.

Not much diverted during the day
The falls does this crazy thing. They want the water for tourism, but need the power during the day. So at night, with extra power around, they pump / divert a huge amount of water in these huge water reservoirs and use the Niagara River for power. My brother was a life guard on a beach around there, and said about 7pm you would see the water level go down a foot or so when they started the power generation from the Niagara River. During the day they use the water stored up all night to power the generators.
Go ride on the Maid of the Mist if you get a chance. You really see how big and powerful the falls are. |

I really enjoyed seeing the falls. Make sure to stay on the Canadian side, the US side has nothing.
Another plus at least when I was their, is I got to see all the muscle cars tearing it up on the street. I don't know if their was a meet or something but I remember a few times we would be walking and see them dragging at the stop lights.
