Fear of flying?

Ok.. so... lets say I just happen to have this incredible fear or stepping foot on an aircraft and being hurtled through the atmosphere in a big metal craft.

what drug, if any, can I take to be completely knocked out for an 8 hour flight?

I have tried dramamine(sp) with it not working on me at all.

jt20 09-12-2009 11:54 PM

ny quil

jt20 09-12-2009 11:55 PM

...then a shot of Jack

they'll be wheeling you off the plane

iwrock 09-12-2009 11:58 PM

When are you going to be in vegas? I am going to vegas here shortly..

450slcguy 09-12-2009 11:59 PM

Face your fear and conquer it instead of surrendering to it. Don't be a pussy.

Fulcrum525 09-13-2009 12:00 AM

Blow to the head.

x2 just take a load of ny quil, put your head phones on and knock out. Ask if you can sit in the front of your seating so you have more leg room and won't wake up from being uncomfortable and look down at your watch and see you've only been asleep for 45 minutes out of your 8 hour flight.

Don't worry, you'll be fine! If things start getting crazy (turbulence, ect..) just take deep breaths.

Have fun in Vegas! I love the little tram cars that take from from the gate to the actual airport.. :P Welcome to the western deserts!!!! You have a high of 97 in Vegas lol

TheDon 09-13-2009 07:35 AM

lol... I'm staying at the Red Rock Resort in the massive suite(room is on the house), my friend invited me to go out there for the Delorean Car Show West so I was like... alright, I can swing it with class being moved around.

I think I will try the nyquil trick, that might work best.

Dee8go 09-13-2009 07:43 AM

Ambien?

davidmash 09-13-2009 11:08 AM

I do not think it' a 8 hour flight. More like 5 or so. I know its about 2 1/2 from DFW to LAX and about 2-3 from DFW to the East coast. I don't have access to flight schedules anymore but unless you have a connection and are including ground time, I am pretty sure it's closer to 5 hours.

Medmech 09-13-2009 11:22 AM

First I think you should tackle your fear, is it the crowded space of the fear of crashing? Personally I hate the crowds I immediately put my headphones on and watch back to back movies or read if that is tickling my fancy.

If your fear is crashing remember that if there is an in air problem you have the rest of your life to think about it.

If you must sleep, use Unisom its over the counter and usually does not have the hangover properties of Nyquil.

280EZRider 09-13-2009 12:02 PM

Fear of flying can be contributed basically to 2 reasons: Misunderstanding of what is really happening when airborn (and the media will lead you astray every time, as they don't know what they're talking about when it comes to aviation), and total lack of control over ones own life while airborn. Once these 2 issues are understood, they can be addressed.

Matt L 09-13-2009 12:17 PM

Then there is the outsourcing of aircraft maintenance to Manila or Panama.

HuskyMan 09-13-2009 02:54 PM

take a portable DVD player and watch "Inglorious Bastards" during the flight. guaranteed to put you and your fellow passengers to sleep.

pawoSD 09-13-2009 03:06 PM

Psh, flying is fun. You're way more likely to get hit by a bus or lighting than be in a plane crash.

Face it like a man! Drugs are for girly-men!

gerkebi 09-13-2009 05:31 PM

Ambien will knock you out for too long, it's not an 8 hour flight. Nyquil is the way to go, double shot. Better have some Red Bull ready on the other side. Don't drive when you get there, cab to the hotel.

Hatterasguy 09-13-2009 05:37 PM

Suck it up, or sit in the airport bar and get drunk before you have to depart. Sneaking on booze is hard, and buying inflight is expensive. So just get silly falling down drunk and after 5 hours you should be pretty sober when you land.:D

I enjoy getting slightly sloshed as much as the next guy, but this idea is completely moronic. The last thing you want to do is drink alcohol before or during a flight. Inflight pressurized air is extremely dry and alcohol drys you out as well. With a cabin altitude of 7 or 8 thousand feet, your oxygen level is low, which will compound the experience of feeling $hitfaced. And when the flight is finished, you'll feel like hammered $hit. Now after the flight, well that's a different story.

You can buy the little bottles for about $1.00 at any liquor store. You can leave them in your carryon in the plastic bag. The Feds don't care.

Everything in moderation.

PaulC 09-13-2009 07:46 PM

Have Sully fly you.

I have a phobia too, but I had a revelation several years ago...I was in a car wreck, and it was a doozie. I had very little recollection of it, just a flash of white as the airbag went off in my face. I figure, chances are, if the plane goes down, especially if it has a sudden "event", I won't be aware for more than a second or two.

I don't fear being dead, there are just certain ways I'd prefer not to die.

As an aside, the funeral home where I worked in the 80s got one of the victims of the Pan Am flight that was blown up over Lockerbie...not a pretty sight. The family wanted to know if they could see him...we suggested that they would do better to remember him as he was prior to the flight...

gerkebi 09-13-2009 08:41 PM

I'm not afraid of dying. I just don't want to be there when it happens.

Beat me to the punch on this one. :D

TheDon 09-13-2009 09:43 PM

ehh im not 21 so i cant liquor up prior to getting on the plane. Nor would I anyways. Its only 5 hours so I am good.. I just hate turbulence.. I cant even ride tower of terror at disney without having a panic attack or something like that. I hate that sudden feeling of dropping and or having no control over it.

I might use some sort of sleep aid but no idea yet since I might be sitting with an interesting person to talk to that will help keep my mind of the flight. I have my laptop which has the extended life battery and I think I can get 4 hours out of it playing a DVD and straight up 7 if I am just surfing the web with no downloads.

...then don't fly. Drive your Benz.

You'll be fine, flights to Vegas are smooooth. Step onto the plane knowing that you'll be fine and that it's no big deal. Hopefully the desert air will allow no turbulence, and pffft you're going to see DeLoreans! That's what you should be thinking about, not the plane ride! LOL

I saw a nice Delorean traveling on I-85 yesterday afternoon in Atlanta.
It had been a while since seeing one...

Don,

Take a big breath. There's nothing bad about flying. The experience will be incredibly painful because of these things and only these things:

1. Federal rent-a-cops / airport "in"security
2. Disgusting food
3. Waiting
4. Layovers.
5.The mad rush of people trying to get onto the plane first.
6. The obsession of passengers that NEED to be in their assigned seat. Who the F cares, just find where the dumb ass was supposed to sit and sit there.
7. Seat butt (Only applicable if the flight is over 4 hours)
8. The attendant's insistence that she doesn't give you the whole can of Coke. " I WANT THE FULL CAN WOMAN!"
9. Overbooking
10. Layovers
11. Did I mention overbooking and layovers?

Other then that flying is a breeze! It's kind of like being on a boat ;)

TheDon 09-14-2009 09:24 AM

well I might see one of our forum members at the airport.. lol Lexxani does something for TSA...

im flying southwest so im checking in exactly 24 hours prior to boarding
