Blackberry owners, a question

This PIN messaging system, is it free free. IE I dont need to have data turned on to use it? I know stupid question I dont have data and I have a blackberry.. I know but I have no need for the data plan I just bought it for the qwerty board and supreme screen quality.

I have unlimited texting but some of my friends with bb's dont and they said to just PIN them...

You have to have BIS or BES otherwise you may rack up some serious data charges, depending on your carrier you may be able to get a mini plan for about $5.00.

I always thought that on the newer devices you had to have a data plan. I have bis so i am not sure if i would get charged otherwise. I use my blackberry messenger all the time though.

Yes you do need to have a data plan. It uses an internet connection to connect to the BIS server at RIM's server farm somewhere.

On Verizon Wireless all blackberries are required to have a data plan. Smartphones released after a certain date which I believe was in 2008 are required to have a data plan as well.

AT&T from what I have seen does not require a data plan on blackberries. Personally blackberries make lackluster standalone smartphones compared to every Treo or Windows Mobile phone I've owned. A dataplan is relatively crucial to its use.

Your right about the blackberry being useless without the data. I think that all smartphones are useless without data plans. My sister has a palm centro and she can't do anything really but text because my parents won't pay for data.
