Congratulations.
Got into a long debate with my neighbor who is a recovered alcoholic a couple days ago. He started talking about food addiction and sex addiction. I protested. Doesn't make sense to me to talk of food or sex addictions since they are necessary for survival. Alcohol addiction or drug addiction ok but to talk of food or sex addiction is roughly equivalent to talking of life addiction which we should all resolve by suicide.

I've been trying to get a grasp on Lacan recently. I'm sure he has some take on addictions.

I used to live up in Shafer (right next to Hazleden) with my brother. My brother and his family still live up there. IIRC you live in Edina?? That will be about an hour (should be closer to 45-50 mins) but at least you will be going against traffic. Or you could move up there. It is a very pretty area with all the lakes.

I hope you sell the wagon. If you keep dropping the price, eventually you'll get to my price range.

Congrats. I hope you enjoy the new endeavor.
Thanks. The car is at my folks but I live nearby in SW Mpls. Im hoping my weekend appt. will buy the car as she is bringing cash.

I just got accepted to Hazelden's Graduate Program in Addiction Studies and will be a LADC-Professional Practice. (Licensed alcohol/drug counselor) aka psychotherapist.

http://www.hazelden.org/web/landing.view

The population which interests me are those with a dual-diagonosis (mental illness and addiction), so will be working along with a psychologist or may look at getting my PhD.

It'll be a busy next year or so, but well worth it!
A friend is a psychotherapist. She was talking last week about how difficult it is to get some clients to pay. I asked if she’d tried using shame and before she could respond her assistant said: “That’s part of my job!” She was joking of course, but it was still funny!

You made a wise choice. Going back to school is great! Stay there as long as you can. Set your sights to earning a PhD and don’t look back. You wont regret it.

Does a food or sex addiction increase or decrease the likelehood of survival. Obesity? STD/AIDS?

I think a person can overeat or oversex, but in my view, a true addiction only occurs if the substance/practice in question could have been completely avoided to begin with. Theoretically, sex can be avoided, but in practice that is virtually impossible for most people and food can never be avoided. So both eating and sex can be engaged in to excess, they aren't addictions. Alcohol and drugs can be completely avoided, hence they are true addictions.

It reads like you are hinting that sex and food addictions are perhaps better described as disorders or dependences rather than as addictions. If so, while your definition of addiction is correct, it’s used too narrowly.

Addiction is commonly used in psychological contexts to describe compulsion, excessive psychological dependence, obsession, and so on...

At least that’s what I remember reading someplace…

I agree that it's used that way but I think it is misused. I'm not even sure I'd call excessive eating or sex disorders or dependencies. They are excesses of natural goods. Alcoholism and drug dependencies are excesses of unnatural goods.

Congrats Ted, I'd never trust a Counselor that hadn't been there/done that. Should be a very rewarding gig.

How is it misused?

Also your definition of natural and unnatural are way too narrow. Humans are part of nature so anything they do would be an extension of that nature. Some of it is pretty creepy, but it is natural.

What would you call eating or sex disorders if not addiction: Coinsures?

My friend who spurred this discussion is a good example of the difference. He's an alcoholic. The cure for his addiction is complete avoidance of alcohol. That's not possible with food and close to impossible with sex. Hence I think they should be classified differently.
Disorders is fine with me. I agree that humans are natural. I prefer 'second nature' for humanly created things.

There's a lot of cross-addiction, so it's "easier" to work with them in a similar manner, e.g. the 12 steps.
