i wasnt sure where to make my intro.

hello,
i was searching the web for info on for which vintage benz i should be looking to buy and stumbled into the forum. i had bought a rusty tore up 71' 250 out of stupidity a few months ago. but have since learned the errors of my ways.
ive been doing a little more research and ive decided to be patient to buy. in the mean time ill keep a low profile and learn what i can, if thats alright?

Welcome aboard. I also bought a '71 250 that I probably shouldn't have.

Before you ask what vintage Benz you should buy, it's probably better to ask if you should be buying one at all. If you enjoy working on old cars and are willing and able to do a lot of the work yourself, then they might be for you. If you pay someone else to work on an old car, you'd better be rich.

thanks for the welcome.
very understandable about keeping the cars maintained by by yourself vs. paying someone. since i moved to the san francisco area all i do is work and do volunteer work, after that i just sit bored. i almost bought a dog the other day but i think id rather have a m.b.
thanks again!

Just take your time and keep looking. The more cars you look at, the more your learn. Let us know when you think you've found a reasonable candidate and maybe we can help you make sure it's the right choice. These cars are great, but any old car is a bit of a commitment.

Welcome to the forum. Lots of knowledgeable people here. I'm guessing that you and Matt will be the regular tag team when the religion threads get fired up.

Welcome.

What everyone else has already said in their posts regarding acquiring an older MB, I agree with 100%.

Kerry – I too, was trying to find the words to cover that initial thought.
You did so, quite nicely.

What I have learned from owning a "classic" Mercedes is it becomes an obsession. Even if the car is in pretty good condition it's never good enough. I brought so much money in the past to the Santa Monica dealership it's insane.

And my car was in perfect running condition; new rear window rubbers (only at the dealer) $250, did it with out blinking like a coke addict. New ignition with all the door and trunk locks, so I could keep one key() I needed OEM: $750,-, no problem.

When I going to get my next Mercedes it's going to be perfect from the start.

Btw, I sleep so much better now.

Welcome!

Most people searching the web end up here looking for fruit tree advice.

Welcome to the forum! Don't get in a hurry. I had the tendence at first to think that I should jump on anything I was remotely interested in. There are more good MBs out there than you might imagine. You're in California, so your chances of getting something that is not a rust bucket are a lot better than they would be our here on the East coast.

I'll add my howdy too.
Keep looking and ask questions.
The 123 ('77 to '85 240D's and 300D's) chassis cars are rather robust and not too difficult to work on, mostly. The latter ones have more advanced stuff, as you may have figured out.

Let me jump on the welcome wagon. You have arrived at perhaps the best web site for information. There is no shortage of opinions, here, on any topic.
If you haven't seen it yet, here is the best nugget of Old Mercedes TRUTH: There is nothing as expensive as a cheap Mercedes.
They are wonderfully engineered and built cars. I often marvel at seeing how much thought went into the design even to thinking about the person who will have to take it apart and fix something.
I favor old diesels simply because there is no computer or electronic sensors to go bad. Also with a diesel, the problem is always the fuel system ( unless there is a major mechanical issue) Its is far easier to diagnose no start or poor running because (except in rare cases) it cannot be the ignition system at fault--that is why I say, " Its alawys the fuel system."
Anyway, welcome. There are sub forui ( what IS the plural of forum?) covering almost any Mercedes you can find, and most of the members are knowledgeable, and willing to share ( Their behavior on OD, notwithstanding).
Use the Open Discussion sparingly; you might find it adictive.

Talking very much appreciated

thank you all very much for the welcoming!
also thank you for words of encouragement. im sure that there are many strays (as mentioned) that find there way to the forum seeking free advice and are never heard from again. but with a welcoming like that and the shared appreciation of cause (as well the information ive picked up on from the archives), id be a fool not to stick around.
obviously, i wont be answering to many questions or have much to share. but if it says im online, then the chances are im in here reading posts. ill be learning and waiting for my chance to have something to say. if anything, maybe ill be good for a laugh or two

thanks again!
