John I watch Bill O all the time. You are correct BillO is not nearly as far right as Hannity nor as annoying. I just find it strange you seem to take everything on Fox as true then repeat it and not originate your own take on things. Maybe I am wrong but it seems that way.

Funny how Chris still considers himself a journalist.

Try watching BBC America. You can at least get the gist of what's going on in the world, without this country's particular political overtones laced throughout.
I'm old enough I grew up watching Walter Cronkite, David Brinkley, etc, on the network news. Those gents were still old school, took it as a duty to objectively report the news without interjecting their, or anyone else's, political views. They well knew the power they had to mold public opinion if they so chose, and took it as a responsibility to avoid that temptation - whereas most of the talking heads today simply view it as an opportunity to be exploited. I thought it appropriate that old Walter passed away almost to the day of the 40th anniversary of the first landing on the moon. A class act right to the end. |
Indeed, he was.

Cronkite, Huntley and Brinkley
I am not so sure about Cronkite and Brinkley being 100% objective. What they DID have was a idea, based on what had happened in Germany and even here during the war and in the years leading up to it, on what can happen if the "news" becomes propaganda. I do think that Cronkite and Brinkley and the other "giants" of the day tried hard to be as objective as they could. The networks also employed huge fact checking staffs to ensure that they got the stories right. I am not saying they did not have a slant based on the editorial staff and the corporation's own position (CBS was very liberal even back in the 1950s) but they tried to at least know the truth and report it. Today the news organizations on the left and on the right seem to be more in the spirit of the late 19th and early 20th century mud slingers and yellow journalists. Even the NYT who had kept above that kind of thing 100 years ago has succumbed. I think it all stemmed out of the "Investigative Reporter" fad of the late 1970s mixed in with the weakening of libel laws. Getting back to Matthews, he is as guilty of yellow journalism as anybody, and should not be taken seriously. HHe hhas shown himself to be an organ of the left just as Glenn Beck is an organ of the right. As for the BBC... They have perfected a very dry delivery and seem to be credible, but even going back to the 1920's they have been a tool of whichever government is in power in the UK. That means that under theTories they leaned right and under Labour they lean left. However to take them as the definitive source for unbiased news is the wrong thing to do. The best thing to do is to listen to Matthews, Beck, CBS, CNN, FOX, and the BBC and then FORM YOUR OWN OPINION based on multiple sources... Since CM has apologized for his statement about the incredibly brave and self sacrificing men and women who choose to defend HIS FREEDOM TO CRITICIZE THEM, he should get a pass. However, if he continues calling our Military the "enemy" he should lose his sponsors as he will lose his viewers. |

I normally take a look at the NY Times, WSJ, CNN, BBC, and Al Jazeer (all online, forget TV and radio); then I try to average the spin. I don't think there is a single news source that can be trusted.
