Oh my gosh! I am cured!

For the past week I have been suffering from my only seasonal allergy, post nasal drip brought on by snow and cold weather. Whoever came up with that name is just a cruel cruel person. It generally passes, but I hate the suffering.

Anywho I have been waking up in the night hacking away because the crap tickles my throat and makes it unbearable to sleep. Well my room mate told me this really crazy trick that he does when he flies back home (he's from Hawaii).

He showed me this netti pot and how it's used and told me to go and get a bottle of isotonic saline and one. Heat up the saline and flush out my nose.

I was worried it was going to burn, but much to my surprise it was very soothing. I could feel it rushing into my sinuses. Man i've never seen so much nasty gunk.

I'm holding onto this thing. I absolutely love it! I'm using this anytime I have any nose problems.
I'm cured for the time being My throat is completely clear and I feel so much better!

I will have to give that a try, I have had severe allergy problems ever since I moved to KY in 1997, I cough so much that my ribs hurt daily. Thanks for the tip man.

Look at the NeilMed kit - I've found them to be much easier to use and more effective than a netti pot (easier to control how much pressure you use).

When I have some congestion I get some water boling in an old fashoned tea kettle and breath steam in as hot as I can stand it for a couple of minutes. It helps loosten things and kills germs. If I get a really roaring sinus thing going I will make a half glass of water as hot as I can stand it and add salt til it tastes like sweat and cup my hand and snort the saline up into my nose until it runs down into my throat and spit it out. Repeat til the water is used up.

I've been doing this for years now. I used to get antibiotics for sinus all the time and the side effects finally seemed worse than the infection.

These old home remedies allow your immune system to get strong. I hardly ever get sick.

I just recently started using a neti pot too. I have allergy issues after I mow the grass or mow up leaves during fall clean ups. I used to snort water in the shower which was better than nothing.

Several friends told me I should try one. I finally caved in and bought one after Pizzachef explained that you pour the pot into one nostril and the water runs out the other nostril flushing your sinuses. It's MUCH better than snorting the water in the shower and it helped with a recent sinus cold I had too.

As a farmer who is allergic to hay as well as anything else that grows and flowers, I can tell you that prescription Flonase is the only way to fly.
That and whiskey.....

Does an antihistamine stop the allergies?

Just so you make sure it is not the turkey baster that someone used to get pregnant with.

You do realize that while the steam can dilute the mucus and thus causing it to be more easily blown out, I doubt it can kill germs in your nose. If it can kill germs, it can cook your nose and kill the cells in you nose.

Tried Veramyst yet? It has less of a nasty taste and smell and is everything Flonase is and more. Veramyst comes in a better spray container too. I used to use Nasonex until I kept seeing that stupid french accented bee and found it irritating. Veramyst was said to be the "Son of Flonase" because of their similarity but I think the smell and taste is better.

Our natural immune system uses heat (fever) to ward off illness. Why not steam? A fever does not cook our cells does it?
