. . .MISHAWAKA, Ind. (AP) -- AM General plans to lay off 300 workers from the northern Indiana factory that makes Humvees for the military.

. . .Company spokeswoman Celeste Ross says the jobs cuts at the Mishawaka (mish-ah-WAH'-kuh) factory were needed because the military has been ordering fewer of the hulking all-terrain vehicles. The new round of layoffs will start Feb. 14 and follow the layoffs of about 250 workers a year ago.

. . .Ross tells WNDU-TV that the company is stabilizing its production rate and expects that to remain steady for the foreseeable future.

. . .WSBT-TV reports the company also is optimistic that it could add hundreds of jobs as production starts on a wheelchair accessible vehicle known as MV-1s that run on compressed natural gas.
