Cool stuff within 6 hrs from El Paso for an active young couple?
Hey all,
You just gotta love this forum's diversity, makes asking about stuff like this reasonable. I'll be in the El Paso area, and get 4 days off. Need to stay within around 6 hours (by car) of El Paso... Phoenix, Tucson, Roswell, Silver City, Albuquerque, or Santa Fe are the bigger cities around my travel distance. Jw if anyone has any good ideas for a fun 3 to 4 days for a young couple to see some cool sights, and not get mugged, for a small getaway. Like outdoors, but not exactly setup for a nature hike... Love historical sites and other scenic stuff. She wants to shop a little bit, a cool mall or something would be sweet. A good amusement park would be awesome too. A decent hotel is a must (although a night in a rental car sounds fun ![]() Anyways, the trip needs to be to a decently safe stuff (no cool abandoned houses in the ghetto, as much fun as that sounds ![]() Any Ideas? Post it up, I'd love to hear some feedback. Thanks for the help ~Nate

I agree. SantaFe's probably the best on that list.

Why Santa Fe?
And as fun as Jua'rez sounds, I dont think I'll be planning an unarmed trip there any time soon. ~Nate

If you are looking for party time instead of scenery, head north to San Antonio instead, check out the River Walk. Then drive to Austin and get directions to 6th St, music and party capital of Texas. El Paso is the most crime-ridden, violent city in Texas. Be cool. Don't cheap out on hotels, stay in the best place you can afford. Dope deals are going on all over the place in the cheap digs, another great place to get shot is a Motel 6. |

If you time it right, there are 2 Saturdays per year that you can visit ground zero of the first atomic bomb explosion at White Sands.
Is my geography that bad? I thought San Antonio was south of El Paso.

No, you're right, El Paso is north of Austin and San Antonio. It's also way north of the FL Keys and Honolulu.

Exactly why my plans do NOT include El Paso, and Mexico is closed to anyone with a brain.
San Antonio is south of El Paso, but It's not right on the boarder. Been to San An, and it's a good time. But, It's a bit out of my range of commute. Santa Fe looks fun, and its not too far from Albuquerque, where there's also amusement parks. ~Nate

Carlsbad Caverns are not that far away either. On the way up to Santa Fe, stop in on the Camino Royale National Parks on the way. The Camino Orales was the expressway built by the Spanish to connect Mexico City with Santa Fe.

in albuquerque you can ride a tram car to the top of sandia peak which is a fun ride ( you can also hike it but you already ruled that out). taos pueblo is a nice place to visit (may be more than 6 hrs but not much, i reckon). durango, colorado i a cool town but probably like 9+ hrs from el paso...[edit](google maps has it a 8 hrs)
durango-silverton railroad might be closed in the winter but that was a cool trip

double right on JR's advice regarding hotels. I am assuming you are military; try to get a room at the guesthouse at Ft Bliss.

I'd try to find the hotel featured in No Country for Old Men.
