Have to sell 1 --- which one?
Ok. I need to sell one of my cars.
I have a 1984 300SD unknown mileage (~150K). Read about it here. http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/diesel-discussion/256199-back-diesel-game-1984-300sd.html I have a 1995 E420 110K miles. Read about it here. http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/tech-help/249348-my-1st-w124-1995-e420.html I have a brand new to me 1982 240D with 79K miles. Read about it here. http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/diesel-discussion/271947-1982-240d-new-addition.html I'll give some more particulars later...gotta put my son to bed. |
The 420 while a magnificent car is fiendishly complex and uses a lot of gas....that would be the one to go for me.
|
Start with what you want out of a daily driver. Me, I like something nice, reliable, and comfortable - but I drive 140 miles a day. So I have Lexus as a daily driver. If it were me, I'd sell the SD first and daily drive the 420E. Fuel mileage isn't important - these cars are already depreciated so you can afford to spend more on fuel; then I'd use the 240D on fun days, something easy to work on, and have fun in when you want decent fuel mileage. Next to go would be the 240D - only because it's worth the most.
|
Under no circumstances should you sell that 240D. Unless it's to me. Dump the gasser first. The 300SD would be next to go if you really had to. The 240D, never.

SELL THE NON-DIESEL!!! Okay, I'm a bit biased. I know nothing about the E420.
|
They are all good for different reasons. The diesel should be worth a good amount to someone who wants to convert it to veggie power. Or maybe a reason for you to keep it and do it yourself. If you have a long commute you would want the nicest one for that.

A little more information for those playing at home. My commute is only 5 miles. I don't drive for work..just to and from. I take the occasional trip down to San Diego (100 miles), but nothing else.
The E420 is in almost perfect mechanical condition. It just needs a blower motor regulator, and possibly a blower motor. Other than that....everything is sound mechanically. It is in nice condition cosmetically. The paint has some scratches in it and the bumpers could use a re-spray. I talked to a detailer who thinks he can get the scratches out by color sanding it. I'm in ~6K. Resale = $3000 - $5000. The market seems to have really tanked on the V8's. The SD has cost me 3K and I still have seat issues which have prevented me from driving it for quite some time. Even with the seats and interior fixed up, I doubt I could get more than $1500 for it. It has faded hood and trunk and a dented front fender and rear panel. The 240 I'm in 1K, and I think I could get $2500-$4000 for it. I actually like the 240 the least. I just don't fit in it that great (I'm 6'7"), and it is a HUGE change in performance from the gasser obviously, but it sure is pretty and practical....the around town mileage in the V8 is brutal. I like the SD's, but I sure did lose my patience when I bought it. I'm chasing my money on that one, and I don't like the feeling. The SD is without question....not even close....the most cosmetically challenged of the three, but ice cold ac....new shocks...brakes.....interior.....great seats if I can get them installed. Anyway, maybe this will sway some you. Any more thoughts? What about prices? Do you think I'm around the right ballpark? Not for us cheapskates, but the E-bay buyers? The last problem with selling the 240 is I would feel really guilty about buying it cheap and reselling it so soon. Thanks for participating. |
Sell the gasser, obviously.
|
Hmm...kinda tough choice based on the info you've given. Maybe you should sell the two you like the least and buy an sd in overall better condition than yours or maybe even an sdl...

I'd get rid of the newer car - stay retro with your '80s beasts!
|
You already said you like the 240D the least, and it is an automatic. I've never understood the existence of automatic 240's.

I guess I shouldn't be surprised at the overwhelming choice for selling the E420. This is, after all, a predominately diesel forum. Have you guys driven an E420? It is the nicest car I've ever owned. It is smooth, solid, and a pleasure to drive.
The other thing is, as crazy as it seems to me, I think the 240 and the 420 would bring about the same amount of money, and it would take a hard-core diesel nut to choose the 240 over the 420. Despite this, the cheapskate in me realizes the 240 SHOULD cost much less to maintain, and I could do many more things myself to save even more money. Thanks for the replies. This is a tough decision. Wish I could keep them all |
The 240 should also outlive the 420 by several decades.

All things considered, I'd be leaning to sell the SD if it were me. I would also contemplate upgrading the E420 to a W211 E320 gasser. Under no circumstances would I part with the newly acquired 240D. But that's just me. |
