The Eleven Commandments

My current Ethics class decided to engage in an exercise to update the 10 commandments. The class agreed on eleven, after each individual developed his or her one 10. Curious as to what people here think of them. Everyone also agreed to a footnote which goes something like 'These are not written in stone. We are not original intent'ers'

Do not murder
Do not intentionally deceive
Do not steal
Do not irresponsibly destroy the environment
Treat people with equal respect
Educate yourself and contribute to society
Expose yourself to different cultures
Compete healthily
Everyone has a right to an education, food, shelter, safety and medicine
Everyone is entitled to equal consensual relationships
Everyone is entitled to their own spiritual beliefs

I thought I saw a movie where they said the 11th was "Thou Shalt NOT get away with it"?

Kerry thanks for the thread makes you think outside the box. Religion in the Digital Age....12th commandment: Thou shalt not create malicious viruses(sp) that will cripple Microsoft..

I don't think everyone being entitled to a right is a commandment- More like a blanket "Thou shalt not infringe on the rights of others" or "Thou shalt keep thy nose in thine own business".

Strike intentionally and irresponsibly.
I agree with 4x4. The last three are what I consdider declarations of entitlements, not commandments.

I always liked the comment by the Supreme Court Justice who said, " My rights end where yours begin."

I suspect the reason they did not propose a blanket statement like that is because it leaves completely open what those rights might or might not be. So they wanted to specify particular important rights.

Not sure why people are interpreting those rights as positive rights as opposed to negative rights. A right of free speech does not necessarily require that someone provide speech to another person.

I found it noteworthy that not even the most religious of students proposed any of the first 4 and I made it clear to the class that if they preferred the original 10 it was perfectly fine to propose them.

That is interesting, most 21st century people are probably more concerned with how they treat others than the "ritual" part of their religions.

OK, go to school to get your education.

The local soup kitchen for your food.

Go to a church for your shelter, then join habitat for humanity and give someone else shelter.

Go to cuba or canada for your helathcare.
Or vote for it here.

Then pay your fair share of taxes for all of the services you recieve.
And quit complaining.
