Watches

I know some of you are into watches so I'll ask here. I want to buy a watch for myself and this watch looks like the perfect watch for me http://cgi.ebay.com/1-NR-New-SEIKO-5-MEN-AUTOMATIC-SEE-THRU-WATCH-SNXS73K_W0QQitemZ5077019344QQcategoryZ31387QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
I can't seem to find one like this here in the US but I am worried that if I buy this watch (and there seems to be a lot of them on ebay) it will be cheap somehow. I have looked at seiko's and like them allot but they don't make the one I want for the american market. Any experience with seiko's for the Japanese market? Are they different than the US versions? And how can they make an autowind mechanism so cheap?

A Seiko 5 is an excellent watch for the money. There are plenty around and you should be able to find one stateside.

There are watches that Seiko only releases in Asia, the most notable of which is the Grand Seiko. But I'm 99% sure you can get a 5 here.

But given your handle, shouldn't you be looking for an Omega?

Yes I should look for an omega but I just can't afford one. The other reason for the name is from the movie The Omegaman

Breitlings are weird. IMO their good stuff is really good and their bottom line stuff is overpriced. The upper range of their line uses in house movements and the bottom end uses off the shelf ETA movements that they get a premium for.

Nice watches though, not my style but nice.

What does everyone think of the Invicta watches with the automatic Swiss movements?

For that matter, what about the regular Invicta automatic movement watches? I understand they get their movements from Japan, possibly from Casio or Seiko.

Looks to me like a helluva good watch for not much money.

Seiko 5

You can't really go wrong with a Seiko 5. They are some of the most reliable and robust automatic watches you can buy. Don't expect frills, Sieko produces 5's in a number of price ranges. I am pretty sure this one has a folded metal bracelet.

Try hitting some other forums like the poor man's watch forum for more information (http://www.pmwf.com). I think on a whole you would be impressed with the response. There are a lot of good watches that you can buy for less then $1000 (some say Rolex is the best $800 watch that you can spend $8000 on). You can read all about them on these watch forums.

Two other points:
There are a lot of watches for less then $300 that are of excellent quality, if you get into it, you will find yourself with a collection in a few years.
IMHO, between a Rolex Sub and an Omega Seasmaster , the Seamaster wins hands down for quality.

I always say that Hamilton is the best $3000 watch that you can pay about $800 for.

I did some research on my Hamilton, and discovered that it uses the Valjoux 7750 movement.

There are many high-end Swiss watches that use the same movement as my Hamilton automatic chronograph, but charge 4 to 5 times as much.

The Valjoux 7750 is a widely used movement since it wass introduction in 1973. It is used as the basis of many chronographs from companies including Baume & Mercier, Breitling, Fortis, Franck Muller, Longines, Minerva, OMEGA, Oris, and Universal Genève.

The Omega Seamaster model 1164 is also based on this same movement.

Cheap watches

I have a couple of high end watches, one wont be mentioned out of fear .
I find myself wearing the cheap chinease/japanese automatics more then anything.

These are three of my favorites, all of which cost less then a tenth of a those high end watches that some love to hate.
