Not Political, but Political Correctness

Watched the old Slapshot movie last night.
Admitedly not a classic in the true sense of the word, but IMHO a classic movie that everybody should see. Add Kelly's Heroes, most Eastwood movie's, Melbrooks ...

Ok I digress.

In the original Newman riles the opposing goalie by yelling "Your wife's a Dyke ..." even uses the Dyke comment in the locker room when the team asks how he got him so riled.

Last night, "your wife's a Lesbian", doesn't seem like much, but I felt it lost a lot in the translation.

Whats your call ??

Should they fix up old movies like that, I'm even against the bleeping of the occasional naughty word, especially when it is used for effect and not to just have a naughty word in there.

Pelham 123 is an example of excess as in all versions every 3rd word is F...

Network TV is a waste of time, find the movies on your cable "on demand" service, download them, or but/rent the DVD as a last resort.

Replacing parts of old films is a commercial decision. If the owner thinks it will make it sell better then that is up to them.

There could easily be two versions: The original and the 'current'. If it sells more DVD's then it will happen.

I am all for getting rid of PC crap and having people grow a thicker skin and getting over it...

This is also like airbrushing out the TwinTowers from downtown New York City because having them in films might upset people. If people get upset - maybe they would DO something about it and not sit on their ample @sses...

In general I am not bothered by PCness. If someone is offended by a word or label I don't mind not using it if I am aware of it.

In the matter of older works of art or literature though I am not in favor of changing it.

In Hemmingway's short story "The battler" (I believe I got that title right) Nick Adams is traveling by foot and on the railroad and comes into a clearing where two men are sitting at a campfire preparing to eat. The one is a retired boxer who suffers from taking way too many blows in the ring. The other man is his friend and protector a man who we now would call African American. In this Nick Adams story Hemmingway refers to himby his first name but describes his actions in this way..." he spoke in a smooth N*gger voice"..." he stood up with long n*gger legs". The reason I bring it up is that it is done in a way which clearly is not demeaning (IMHO) to the man, who is portrayed as a caring, generous and thoughtful man who takes care of the old boxer, protecting and respecting him and being that way to Nick Adams who is a stranger to him as well.

I just thought I would mention it as it seems to fit into the discussion somewhere.

In the case of work done in a different era with different moral codes, etc. I don't believe in changing the work of the artist to match current ideas of what is appropriate.

Works that are demeaning to minorities or demeaning in general I will not be interested in partaking.

That opens up a whole can of worms that I'm very familiar with. When I grew up in Virginia Beach, well, it was a melting pot. My classmates were 50% black, 50% white. You either got along with everyone, or got your ass kicked regularly. I got along with everyone .

Words like the "N" word are only offensive because people allow them to be offensive. Point in case, in my High School back in the day we were having a serious problem with the "pissed off redneck" demographic using a certain "N" word to cut down the black kids. There were a good many fights over it. Eventually, my buddy Xavier (thats how he spelled it) came to me and asked for my help. He was a great big dude, and certainly didn't need any help kicking some ass, but he was in a predicament. Some of the honky kids had called him a N***** and he desired closure. Problem was, if he got in another fight he'd be off the Basketball team. I told him, every time one of those fat mouth breathing honky slobs calls you a N***** just do a "Ted Knight" laugh. (Go watch Caddyshack again, I'll wait.)

Well, he did just that, and it caught on with the black kids at my school. The word N***** essentailly became useless there. Every time anyone tried to use it in a demeaning manor, the subject would just bust out laughing.

Yeah, those were good times. It probably helped that there was more weed in that school than in the entire country of columbia. Honestly, they'd bring in the K-9 to search, but it would just spin around in circles. I was pretty thrilled that my idea worked though.

.... I'm listening to the focking song!....

Anyone changes a line from slapstick deserves a cheapshot with knuckles wrapped in foil...

Converting, or if you will perverting, language in music, film, or books in order to appease current trends in political correctness is a small step from censorship. Anyone doing it should be summarily fired and forced to work at McDonalds, there they can live the ebb and flow of modern speech patterns....

on a side note, whats with peachparts filtering expletives?? guess we must have abused the privilege....there goes my thread about ****ake mushrooms....

It is funny, does anybody realize that the people who espouse PC to the point of 'fixing' old movies - Winston Smith is hard at work! - are the direct descendants of the Victorian prudes who covered classical statues with fig leaves and put covers over 'suggestive' table legs.

I bet that PC police would be aghast at this comparison though, in fact they would be so angry that I would probably not be allo
