Modern cars and light trucks have an average of 225 horsepower under the hood and sophisticated safety systems such as traction control. They are designed to cruise comfortably, safely and efficiently at between 65 and 70 mph—if not faster, particularly in the case of the autobahn-burners German luxury brands sell.

Everyone who says drive at the speed limit should watch this video.

There are parts of Nevada and Utah (and probably other states) where it would probably be best to just have a recommended speed (say 130 km/hr [81 mph]) and not have an actual speed limit.

Last night one of my bar buddies told me about how he got back from Germany, was driving his Nissan, and forgot where he was. He was doing about 110 when he got pulled over. Luckily he had his military ID and his orders showing he had just PCSed from Germany, and the cop was sympathetic enough to write him for 75 in a 55 instead of the full amount.

Skippy, I met an old German guy a while back, actually at my first job. He was telling me all about Germany, and when I told him I liked Mercedes, he had all kinds of car stories. He had a slight limp and after a few days I noticed he was walking to work. I asked him why he didn't have a car (with the stories he told, he surly could drive) he said, he was driving in the middle of Nevada going over 120 and he had gotten pulled over. he said he honestly thought he was within his rights, so he said that to the officer. in return the officer took his license.

Exclamation Informitave Post

I don't do these often, but here'goes.

Speeding is quite possible anywhere, you just have to be intelligent and situationally aware. There are several basic "Do's" and "Don'ts" when it comes to speeding. Here's a few.

Don't speed whilst listening to loud music, or when you are distracted in any way whatsoever. When speeding, your sole focus should be on avoiding collisions with other cars, and picking out lurking pigs. Not to mention stray children and pets (More on that later)

Don't even think about speeding (more than about 5 over) without being equipped with the best in Radar detection or jamming abilities. Be sure to read up on legislation in your area (this means you Virginians.) For example. When I last lived in Arizona, it was legal to have a radar jammer anywhere in your vehicle, but illegal to use one. Nice technicality.
-More on Radar detectors... If you're seasoned with them, and can figure out which direction the cop is from the beeps, go with a passport 8500 (or better) as they seem to have a little bit longer range. They will give more false reports, but if you're good with the beeps you can figure 'em out. Otherwise buy a Valentine V1. It keeps track of how many alerts you have, and what direction they're in.

Don't speed in a manner which makes you stick out in traffic. Also a good idea; don't piss off everyone you pass if you're intent on speeding. This means coming right up on someone's ass in the right lane flashing your lights and honking.

DO speed if you're familiar with the juridictions you're going to be speeding through, and their tolerance toward excessive vehicular speed. Speeding in the middle of the month is usually a little safer in heavy handed states like Ohio and Virginia where they make no effort to conceal their Quota Systems.

DO speed more if you have an inconspicuous vehicle. This means you folks in dusty beater wagons (AKA: My kind of people ) can safely travel 25% faster than those in Signal Red SL-65 AMG's. Poverty has it's virtue's folks. Next time you're complaining about having to repair the rust for the fifth time under the hatch and your air pump starts belching black smoke like a forties Big Band Club console yourself with the fact that you blend into traffic easier. Also officers are more likely to have mercy on the college kid in the battered but roadworthy Benz than they are on the Doctor and his leased CL600.

DO speed more in areas where the situation calls for it. For instance. I've made five or six trips from Eastern Tennessee to Tucson Arizona the last two years. Like Johnny Cash, I have been everywhere, man. I was able to make it from Bristol Tennessee, to Fort Smith Arkansas, spend the night there, and make it to Phoenix without spending another night on the road. There's plenty of times when it's very advantageous to set the cruise to 1 mph slower than the limit (usually 64) and tune out behind a trucker for a while to let some of the savage traffic blow by.

DON'T ever speed through Neigborhoods or anywhere that doesn't give you a clear view of what you're facing ahead. If you hurt someone, their pet, their property, or their Children you're an ******* and I'll line up to ruin your day.

DO speed with buddies. You can even have impromptu groups of two or more. Ask me about this if you like, I have lots of stories about my long trips where I've teamed up with other drivers using only hand signals.

DON'T speed if your car is in ****ty shape. You know it, we know it, the whole world knows it, you won't fool anyone by making it go past them more quickly.

For more on speeding please feel free to ask away. I've had a lot of long distance (2000+mi) ass haulin' solo driving under my belt, and I've never gotten a ticket or been pulled over.

CT has a bunch of 65's but also some 55 and 40's so the cops can meet their monthly.

I have been known to allegedy go pretty fast, at the GTG here a few years ago my friend and I allegedy went up Rt8 at a very high rate of speed. High enough to get the state cops out, as the people coming behind us found out. But it wasn't me I was only in a slow diesel, he had the S600...

But yeah in a good MB on the open road 100-110 is a nice comfy cruise. Or in the case of the S600 a slow cruise...

Classic!

It really wakes them up when you pass them going 100mph faster than they are!

This works well, my friend drove half the way to FL with a yellow Vette that he was running with, didn't know the guy, met in the left lane heading south. The guy had a radar dector and knew how to use it, they made amazing time.

Also your forgetting one important point! Rabbits! I always prefer having a rabbit run in front of me, usualy something that makes a nice radar target like a BMW M3, a ghetto Honda, or a massive SUV.

My SOP is to find one, usualy they are weaving in and out of traffic and in general jerks. I will block them in on purpose for a few minutes to get them nice and pissed, than when they are good and angery let them pass! Run rabbit run as I always say! With a pissed off Range Rover screaming along at 90+ in front of me I can cruise in totaly safety at a fairly good clip.

My dad always says that too, but cops always come from the rear, so it seems like if you were speeding and following a speeding car, you'd get nabbed first.

Its all about distance, you follow him far enough back to give the cop on the side of the road time to get his pray. I prefer a mile if not more, barely in sight.
