![]() ![]() It was a Tiger chasses with a 380mm rocket propelled gun stuck on it! ![]() Over on a gun forum one member was talking about what his dad told him about one they ran into one in Germany. He said it was an exciting morning, when it fired it would take out most of a city block! ![]() Its got Hitlers finger prints all over it, but its still pretty cool.

Jeez that is a monster. I wonder if it was impractical on account of transporting the ammo.
Did you ever see video of that giant mortor the Nazis had towards the end of the war? It functioned sort of like a mortar but it was an artillery piece, and a big one.

Interesting, says it carried 14 rounds, each about 760 lb. And:
To help with the loading of ammunition into the vehicle, a loading crane was fitted at the rear of the superstructure, next to the loading hatch. Even then, the entire five man crew had to help with the loading. It was intended that each Sturmtiger would be accompanied by an ammunition carrier built on the same Tiger 1 chassis, but only one carrier was completed.

You also needed to anchor it to the earth before you fired it. It was eventually outlawed by NATO because it caused a shift in the tilt of the earth everytime it was fired.

Since it had a rocket propelled projectile, I don't think much recoil would be generated.

It operated like a RPG. Conventional fire initially followed by rocket.

Is that an expended shell that is being examined on the ground?

Hmmm, I sure hope not! If it is then the range seems a bit short.

380 mm is basically equal to 15 inches - in other words, an RPG equivalent in diameter to the guns they had mounted on a battleship.
The modern Abrams tanks have 120 mm guns - nearly equivalent in size to the 5"/51's they have mounted on our warships - 127 mm. Hmmm, maybe the Army could save some money and just grab some 5 inchers off of the mothballed ships the Navy has. ![]() Some modified Sherman tanks in WWII actually had high velocity 3 inch naval guns fitted to them, to replace the original rather low velocity 76 mm gun they were fitted with.
