250 bucks for a title........?

So. Stupid me, I managed to loose a title for a car, no problem right? just talk with the DMV get another and thats the end of it... Well, I wish it was that easy... So, I manage to loose the title to my Excursion, BEFORE I registered it to myself, I call the dealership I got it from, Talk with a guy.. says no problem. then I hear nothing. meanwhile my phone get shut off so there's no way for me to call them to check on the progress, so I borrow a cell phone and call them again.. after some run around of them telling me I had to apply for it bla bla bla, they realize I cant, and now, they want 175.00 for the title, and another 75.00 for them to do it, well, I dont have 250 bucks to give em for a title... but Are the Texas Titles that expensive? I've spent at most 30 bucks to get a duplicate title before..

But was that when the care was already titled to you or not?

when the car was registered to me.. I can understand a small charge to go to the auction yard and other place to get a signature... but 250 bucks for everything is a tad steep... esp when you dont have it

IOW, I have you over a barrel, hence I charge what I can get away with for my time and effort.

Have you tried negotiating with the people?

So, you bought a truck from a dealer, and lost the title that had who knows how many reassignments, starting with a title still in the name of the previous owner. Don't forget you may well have to deal with a lien on the title as well.

Can you check with the DMV and determine whose name the previous title was in? Perhaps you could negotiate a lower cost from them.

I'd suggest that it's not quite as simple for the dealer to produce a good title for you as it might have been for you if you had completed the paperwork prior to losing it. Might be time to suck it up.

Jim

it was a repo, so the title was in the lady's name, then to the the auction, then to the Dealer and then to me. to the DMV I have no Claim to the car. There's no leins on it. as for sucking it up.... I'm not going to comment on that.

I think they're charging a reasonable amount for the time it going to take to get this done.

Chances are they're going to have to go through the bank that repo'd it to reprint the title, then they transfer it to you. Its going to take quite a few people taking time out of their day to get this taken care of. Time is $$$, and if I were the dealer I'd be a little pissed off if I got scoffed at for charging a reasonable amount for my time.

This is why I get all the cars re-titled to the dealership before selling them. It may cost a little more but it avoids headaches when this happens. Very few dealers actually do this, btw.

What I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around is how you don't have $250 to pay them. I don't mean to sound condescending, but it doesn't make sense to spend every dime you have on a used car and hope nothing bad happens. I couldn't imagine having at least a few grand put away for a s*it happens fund, but that's just me...

I did have a ***** happens fund... our roof failed and needed replacement..aaand thats where that went off to. I know they will charge for time, I know it takes time to get everything... but I was expecting at most 100 bucks... but, it is what it is and somehow I'll get it together.
