I love the no room comments. I guess you guys have never tried to work on the front of a 603? In 20 min you can have the entire front clip off of the car, then you have all the room in the world. And you don't have to discharge the AC to do it!

Issues to look out for: Rust, rust rust. Look under the floors, at the strut towers, etc. Power windows, they like to break (both the regulators and the wires going to them in the door jams). Timing chains. If meh oil was used they could be wiped out with that many miles. You'll hear them rattling at idle. The shifter linkage is probably worn out too, but that isn't too hard to fix. The coolant outlet / thermostat flange is plastic. It should be replaced. Cheap and easy to do. Use the correct G11 coolant afterwords.

That is one of the first GTI VR6s we got in this country. It is not OBDII so you'll need a VAG-Com to talk to the engine computer. The ABS system is not very sophicated (there is no way to view the output from the wheel speed sensors with VAG-COM, for example) but does include basic traction control.

Offer $1500 and get a fun car for a good price. Be aware it will require premium and will hover at just over 20 mpg.

+1 on the Vag-Com - almost a good reason to buy VW.
Have the timing chains been replaced ? that requires pulling the motor away from the transmission.

If you like the car, do it. Don't let these guys get you down. a friend of mine once said "It doesn't have to be the best car for me to like it"

My sister is a member of a VW club and these are some VR6 pics from one of their shows.
This Engine

In this Car!

And of course the Harlequin

Gotta say the guys in her club are all nice guys. That right there says a lot to me when buying a car. we all need help now and then, and having good people to help you is always awesome.

The R32's are pretty quick at autocross. With the AWD they should be good on the road in limited traction conditions with the right tires.

That's a big statement to make with no other points to back it up. I've owned 3 mk2s and a mk3 makes a much better daily driver.
