Thumbs up Google Voice

I know benhogan made another thread here:

Google Phone is here- Free too!

But that is a bit different than this. That thread is about how google is now using gmail to make free phone calls...and being a rival to skype.

This one is just about Google Voice.

My friend had this before anyone else I know, and he was very excited about it. At the time, the only way you could get it is if you were "invited" I guess...maybe it was testing? But now, I believe people can get it without invites! So that's cool.

http://www.google.com/voice

I love it! It does a number of different things. For one, I can text people for free on there. Which is good, since my phone does not have unlimited texting, and you know, us darn teens like to do texting! Haha. If someone texts my google voice number, I have it set up so that it forwards the text to my phone as well, that way if I am not at a computer, I can see that I got a new text!

There is also an option where you can put in your home phone, your work phone, and your cell phone (or whatever else phone you have) and if someone calls your Google Voice number, it rings ALL the phones at once, so someone can reach you! I believe there is a way to customize contacts so that certain contacts only call certain phone numbers...and whatnot. But I haven't used that feature, so I don't really know.

I mainly use it for texting, but also voice mail.

I have one of those ancient Nokia phones...TRAC FONE! WOOOH! Not even a colored screen. How sad. But I don't have a voicemail on my phone...so if my phone is off, no one can leave me messages. Thanks to google voice, I can now get messages! YAY! That is awesome. It also does this thing where it tries to transcribe your voicemails to text. So that you can read what you are hearing.

It's not THAT great at it yet. I mean, it catches a bunch of words, but reading it is just hilarious. I have seen it mess up really bad, and the sentences it makes up are just hilarious. I suppose if everyone spoke perfectly clear and such...maybe it would be better at it. But in the meantime, I get to be amused by how wrong it is.

Also, you can customize messages. So if a friend calls you you can leave a message saying their name, and whatever else, and then if someone else calls, you can customize a message for them too!

That, combined with the gmail = free phone calls to US and Canada...oof Google...So much! But I am happy about that!

So I just wanted you all to know about Google Voice. Maybe it will be useful to some of you.

I've been using voice and another program for a home phone since our cell phones are shut off (damn it) and I like it. I reccomend the program to anyone... though... the Voicemail Translations are a source for amusement.

I know!!! Very good source of amusement. My boyfriend and I constantly just leave each other voicemails (which is nice because when I'm at college and I can't see him, its nice to hear his voice <3 ) and the translations are so funny!

I love it. I let my room mate call his mom in Melbourne and use up the free 10 cents. Pretty cool and listening to his mom make fun of him was priceless.

If

Some One were to list a google voice #, as part of the largest cellphone network provider's "Acquaintances and Relatives" (synonym) program...
Some One could make and receive RF communications WITHOUT counting
against One's allotted Airtime.

[AKA Free Airtime!]

AND, the GV provides another layer of insulation between you and annoying
calls...'Give out your GV number and allow GV to pre-screen all your calls.
(GV will alert you to incoming calls, and you can HEAR the caller BEFORE
answering the call.)

So many TRICKS available that I've not had time to play with.

And now it can call into your Google voice chat too! The call quality using my Macbook is better then using my G1!

Will you all be ready for Google TV later this year? Either built into new Sony LCD panels and BluRay players, or a STB. Custom Google Chrome browser will be gleefully capturing your video watching habits.

I know some folks who use it to have a single (fake) number to give out. I haven't bothered to play with it because I use my cell number for everything.

okyoureabeast - Hahaha. That is quite amusing! How much did time did that 10 cents give him anyway? A minute?

compress ignite - Good luck playing with it! Hahaa. Let us know what you find out works! And how to do it! Free airtime is cool.

compu_85 - Wow...this is fun! Computer quality for phone calls...better than a phone! NICE. Actually, my boyfriend called me on my dorm phone and he heard my roommate and my friend that were in the room with me pretty well, even though they weren't really close to the phone...I haven't had a chance to try calling anyone on it yet. But I do love my google voice mail. All the messages...and my texts. I want more voicemails! Hahhaa. They are so fun!

MTI - Hee hee. Whatever. They can see what I watch...but...I mean, c'mon. Netflix. It took over Blockbuster and Hollywood Video...Not sure google will beat that yet....

Craig - It is nice to give it out as a fake number. That way, I don't feel like people will violate my actual phone (home/dorm/cell) But I do use it as a real phone for people who I know will just text me a bunch. The only problem with that is that friends now have ONLY my google number, or ONLY my cell number, and are confused when I use the one they don't have.

10 cents at 2 cents a minute equals 5 minutes of Australia.

I guess you could play around and just call people for funzies. I would do that just to hear random accents on the phone
