Thanks, Illinois!

http://newsblogs.chicagotribune.com/clout_st/2011/01/quinn-congratulates-democrats-on-income-tax-increase.html

I'm all for paying the bills, but tempered with some spending restraint might be nice. Oh well. Can't wait for next year's tax bill.

I'd be OK with an increase if I thought for one moment that there would be appropriate cuts to go along with it, and that it really would be "temporary."

I know it, man. We have a nice enough house here (and should own it outright in fairly short order), my folks retired here, and I have several years into a job with a fine retirement plan here (in IL). I hate to throw all that away, but until the Chicago stranglehold on the state lessens its grip, the temptation to skip town is surely on my mind.

From 3% to 5% is a huge hit. That's an extra $600 for the average low-middle class household.

Ditto on voting with your feet. Depending on where in the state you are, Is it possible to cross a state line to get awawy? We ahve a lot of people in my area that work in MD and NJ and commute.

It's basically going from 3% to 5% (for personal income tax).

Come East young man!
New Jersey.

Our republican governor is getting things done with co-operation of a Democratic legislature. Chris Christie is very popular at the moment.
Check it out.

Interesting. Texas is handling its budget situation by cutting spending. California is doing a combination of cutting and taxing. Illinois: just make the citizens pay through taxes!! Ugh. I feel for you you.

Have you ever played Sim City? I remember being a kid and playing that game. You get distracted because your trying to build a cool looking road through the mountains behind your city and next thing you know your city budget is screwed because you've been waisting a lot of money bulldozing and laying roads that just don't work (because the physics in the game are very basic) so you say "Oh Sh!^!!! I spend all my budget!" Bump the taxes to 60 or so percent in December, the year counter rolls around and then bam no budget problem. in January drop the taxes back down before your Sims get pissed!

OK who the hell let the 8th grader loose in Illinois???
How does it feel to be a Sim?

It's not the rate as much as it is the sudden increase and the mentality behind it. IL is terribly behind on it's bills. We spend too much, plain & simple. The fix is to trim some spending, but no one wants to do that; if I thought that 5% would be wisely spent, I'd be much more comfortable accepting it.

Local sales tax is only 6.25% iirc. I believe there are areas near Chicago where it's close to 9%.
