Don't forget that OBL's announced goals included goading the USA into putting troops on Arab soil, war against Afghanistan, and deficit spending to bankrupt the USA and cause it to fall from super power status.

Wasn't the proximate cause the lesson learned by the Mujahadin in Afghanistan with the help of the CIA? An occupying force can be defeated by the use of modern guerrilla warfare and high tech weapons? If they got the Russians out of Afghanistan, they could get the US out of Saudi Arabia.
