Upgrading to OSX Lion?
So it says I must get Leopard first. Does that mean I have to buy it? I'm running OSX 10.4.11 right now whatever cat that is.

Kuan, what processor is your Mac using? You'll need an Intel Core 2 Duo or better based Mac (early single core Intel Macs apparently aren't supported) and the current version of Snow Leopard to run the $29.99 4GB update to OS X Lion, but it looks like you stopped updating your OS around the time of G4/G5 Power PC Macs, running Tiger.

It's a 2GHz intel dual core so it'll run the new OS so it'll run. I'm just unsure of my upgrade path. Apparently I can't (or can I?) install the new OS because... because why? What do people do when they buy a new computer and they want to install an OS?

The upgrade path for your Tiger machine is to upgrade to Snow Leopard via the DVD, then have the computer do the updates from the DVD release to current. The Snow Leopard "Upgrade" DVD is actually the full install and didn't require the machine to have Leopard installed.

1 Gig RAM.

1GB is the minimum to run Snow Leopard. Consider adding some.

I don't think I've seen this officially, but I've heard that you will need/want at least 2GB of ram for decent performance. My three year old macbook pro is running 4GB and it's not exactly fast with snow leopard. You need a "core 2 duo," not a "core duo" from what I've read.

Craig, just for the heck of it, back it up and do a fresh full install of SL, it could make your MBP a bit more frisky, especially if it's been a year or so since.
Kuan, I forgot to mention that since OS X no longer supports Rosetta . . . if you're using any pre-OS X Power PC apps, they're not going to work. |
