I love my new job
For a few years I have been a gallery host and docent at the Auburn Cord Duesenberg museum in Auburn, IN. I now have an additional job. Dusting cars. So I get to clean a few Duesenberg A's and J's inside and out.

Cool cars!
Jay Leno has 8 of them, including that one off stream lined one that cost $25k! ![]()

What a great job! Those Cord L29s had front wheel drive. Unique for its day!

The museum owns 3 model J's and has 2 model A's on loan. The model A is VERY significant itself. There is also a Model X on loan. Only 13 X's were made. Also have the only Model Y prototype on loan. Come and see the Model J engine on stand. It looks enormous, but when you look at it from the end you see the economy of material. Fred Duesenburg was a genius on a bad day. When you see a Duesenburg engine it makes you wonder why we are not more advanced today.

That is the E1 prototype. Fred Duesenberg had much input. Erret Cord wanted a V16. Fred convinced him a V12 would do the job. The E1 was build in 1932. EL Cord wanted a car bigger than the Duesenberg J. But they could not sell Deusenberg J chassis so Cord ordered Fred to destroy the E1. Fred could not bring himself to do it. Rather he disassembled the car and put it in storage in pieces. The E1 is @$#%@$% long!!!! As a side note....you will see Duesnberg J's from 1929-1937. The 485 +/- chassis were all built in 1929. It just took that long to sell a $8500+ chassis without body.

Which auction? There are now 3 auction parks and the museum has their own auction.

Didn't know that. I was there last Labor Day so was thinking of the one just south of Auburn along I69. I think it's now owned by RM Auctions.

What a dream job!
Had a friend years back in Montana, owned Tucker #11. Got to turn some wrenches on that bad boy! Lost touch with him a long time ago, but I believe he still owns it. Guess it's not quite a Cord or Duesy, but I guess it'll have to do till one comes along!! ![]() |

They are casting new heads for them again. Cost a small fortune!
Leno seems to be a driving force around getting parts available for them again, since he drives his and they break. He was commuting to work for awhile in his X.

But when you have that kind of money......
I love the sound of a Model J gearbox at hard acceleration. That gearbox whine is music. ![]() Two years ago I had a ride in an 810 Cord that belonged to its designer Gordon Buehrig. This one was one of the early hand built 'production' sedan. The curator gave the ride which was just in town, but he was not easy on her. That preselect shifting requires some rethinking because as so as you let out on the clutch you shift the level to the next gear. |
