Then in the afternoon cookout with evening fireworks on the property. I'm hoping for a nice easy rain the night before so the area is not to dry to be safe. If all goes well, I'll have an even bigger redneck waterslide going this year.

Ah, Independence Day gun play! :D What could be better than that? It's too bad you live so far away, BobK. :(

Holiday tip: The US flag is on the right as presented when flown with other flags.

Shooting, sailing, hotdogs, and a bit of drinking!

Many thanks to all those brave men who gave up everything so many years ago so we could enjoy it! As they snuck in and out of Philly that hot July signing the Deceleration while the British tried to hunt them down and threatened their family's.

Talks cheap, but it takes balls to be hundreds of miles away talking about rebellion when the worlds most powerful army is only a few miles away from your house and family.

She demands fireworks, so we will go to a local park and be surrounded by screaming urchins running hither and yon, and by bubbas wearing flag t shirts and their fat wimmin' and undoubtedly subjected to speeches by tea party wannabes while paying too much for bad beer and hotdogs that have been boiled beyond recognition. God bless the USA. The best part of July 4th is July 5th.

The Mrs. and I will don our American flag shirts and head to a local park for some fireworks. We can let the kids run rampant while listening to some anti-government rants while drinking some beers and scarfing down hot dogs. God Bless the USA! Oh...wait... :P

We're packing up the troops and headed north to Maine for a long weekend. It'll be the first time I've been up since my uncle passed away. My parents headed up last Saturday, we're headed up Friday afternoon and my brother and his family are headed up Saturday morning. My sister is flying in from New Mexico (hoping to get out before Los Alamos goes up in a nuclear flash).

My uncle built a house on the lake and he and my father own a half-dozen cottages (in various stages of disrepair) and a couple building lots, including the family cottage. My father inherited my uncle's interest when he past away so we're trying to figure out what to do with the properties. So far he's put all the properties on the market except my uncle's house. If a couple properties sell, we might tear down one of the remaining ones and put up a modular home. This weekend will be a bit of a test to see how the dynamic goes  and get an idea of what the future might be.

Lots of boating, skiing, tubing followed by a good amount of drinking, eating and blowing things up. My father's patience will be well tested with all 7 grandkids in one place at that same time. :D It'll be great for my kids to cut the electronic umbilical cord for a few days. They're all waaaay too connected. I can't say I'm looking forward to dealing with the Mrs. complaining about anything and everything, but I figure several bottles of wine should get her through the weekend ok.

That's quite a view! Love the porch!

Life is good indeed. We'll likely lay low and get some chores done around the house this weekend, then try to enjoy the 4th. Maybe I'll smoke a brisket or ribs, and finish off the last of the good German beer I picked up last time I was over there TDY. I'll probably monkey around in the garage a bit, too -- it needs a thorough cleaning-out after this past winter. Wish I had time to track BobK down and join him for some shootin'. I have a new Garand to try out, along with a K98, M1903, and Sig P6 that I have yet to shoot.

Have fun, all!

Sleep hopefully if I don't have to work.

If they really know what they are doing IE: walk on your back-cut off blood circulation to your lower extremitys-crack your neck-twist your rib cage- you will come away from the session feeling invigorated.

I'm sure "Mistress" could handle that for you.

Where I am it is just another day - but I'll celebrate in spirit (despite history!)

Dee8go.
We bring out all kinds of guns, long and short. Hatti would be in heaven. Buddy brought some big bruising Swiss last year. Man what a kick it had! Couple hours of shooting and an hour of picking up brass. You can only do this in a free country.
Although I am in a city, they tend to take a more relaxed approach to fireworks. (stuffs been going off every evening all week around here-I love it). I have 3 acres so I have plenty of room to enjoy without endangering the neighbors.

Is it still true that Most people who wear speedos shouldn't?

Every now and then some big wheel from an overseas oil company would show up at our office and some of us were appointed to show them around the town and keep them out of trouble. I got to do this a lot since I knew the Dallas area well and could also talk shop with them if they had any technical question.

Anyway, one of these minder jobs came up during the week of July 4th so I just spent the day with an oil executive from a African nation, showing them around and what not since I had the day off. During the later part of the day they wanted to know why so many flags were flying and what-not since they were unaware of our holiday and what it represented.

So I ran through the Revolution story rather quickly, and the only question they had was 'Why July 4th?'

That led to a discussion of the Deceleration, which I described as basically a letter sent to King George the III about just what the problem was with his rule and why the war, from the US point of view, had a real reason so the King could not just dismiss the US as a bunch of radicals that were upset over nothing.

Then they laughed and laughed. They thought it was crazy to send the 'letter', and said, 'Only an American would be bold enough to write a letter to a King that says, 'You are wrong!'

By the way.... The diary entry for King George the III's diary on July 4th, 1776, reads, "Nothing important happened today."
