Well, what happens tomorrow when someone loses expensive lures and blames the rods after nicking the ceramic guides? New rod and replace all the lures? What happens when I bring my downrigger to you and say the cannonball came off and I lost some flashers and other equipment?

I had Cabelas sell me a rod where the end broke when casting. If you want to pay for it, I can send you the bill for all kinds of lures, weights and the trophy fish at the end since Cabelas gave me a new rod.

Perhaps apply some common sense. That might be one approach.

You had "all kinds of lures, weights, and the trophy fish" on the rod when casting? No wonder the rod broke.

Agreed. If it were my store, and Kuan's attitude when he came is were as jovial ad it generally is here on the forums, I'd have exchanged him a new rod, given him the lure, and apologized for the inconvenience. Smart business, I say. He'll leave happy and tell others about his GOOD experience in my store, and my karma's still all glow-y.

Easy to say, hard to do. It is very difficult to draw the line which becomes very arbitrary looking. As I said, how would you verify what was lost and when? Out of fairness, if I refunded you, I should refund EVERYBODY with a sob story when it comes to this sort of loss. Much harder when you come in and my common sense says "Go pound sand" and you tell me that your buddy had a similar issue and I paid out. If you ever worked in retail, you will find no end to that kind of crap. We had a customer claim that he lost a job opportunity because his computer didn't send the email like it should have. A free upgrade would sooth his pain, he said.

Of course I had. It broke during the cast but when the lure hit the water, a trophy fish bit but I couldn't reel it in because the rod was broken. It caught and the line broke when I tried. That is my story and I am sticking to it.

If you look at the rod and the complaint is legit in terms of cutting the line.... then I say again... it would have been smart to replace the lure also... and apologize like cscmc1 said....
Future business and word of mouth is way more important than that $5 lure.. which would not have cost them $5 to replace...

Till the next guy comes along with another $5 story and the next and the next and so on. Soon as you get tired of it and cut that off, well, you are now an unreasonable SOB. Best Buy used to let you return a computer and get a full refund. So, when going to a convention, you just "buy" a machine, use it and return. Now there is a 10% restocking fee since they have to sell it at a loss. I used to know a girl who would buy Craftsman tools on a credit card, get cash when she returned it and effectively, got a "loan". Perhaps I am just a little too jaded when it comes to people.

You do appear to be heading towards the Jaded adjective...
