Is that a tactic to avoid having the man who was in charge of the paper when these things happened and is now further up in Murdoch management resign?

I believe the manager was a woman, who now heads the International divison of Murdoch's news operations. Apparently, Rupert's shares took a 3% hit yesterday as the scandal continued to snowball, including other crime victims.

You're right, it is a woman. This is an attempt to protect her I think.

The person who was running the show at the time the hacks took place is a guy. According to the Guardian he is supposed to be arrested on Friday. He is currently a PR guy for the Prime Minister.
I think they had no choice but to shut down since advertisers were bailing on them left and right. No revenue=no chance of profit=why are we keeping this money loser in production. |

From the article in the NYT this morning, it looks like it was more than just protecting her job. Looks like it was an attempt to stop any further digging into how deep the phone hacking scandal had gone. Hacking the phones of the detectives investigating the hacking scandal. It's not going to get any better for Murdoch soon.

How long before we discover that Murdoch's News corp has been doing the same thing in the US?

According to stories coming out of the BBC the British political types are taking full advantage of this for some long overdue payback. It seems that the Murdoch bunch has been pushing them around for many years by what appears to be blackmail if Murdoch did not get the laws passed that he wanted.
If this is true then I wonder if the same thing is being done in every other country News Corporation has a hand in? Their stock is also falling to the point that News Corporation is spending $5 Billion to buy back their stock to keep the price from crashing. This is getting weirder and weirder. |

The BSkyB deal is toast.
US investigators are looking into the hacking of 9/11 vicitims phones. FNC's reporting on their boss' troubles is a bit sparse. An hour after everyone else, the Fox site now has a small above-the-fold mention of Murdoch dropping the BSkyB bid. This is like the way the Soviet press covered Chernobyl: "small problem in the Ukraine." CNN is reporting that Fox News commenators are intentionally avoiding the topic. Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA) violations may also include bribery of UK officials. Senators Barbara Boxer, John Rockefeller and Frank Lautenberg on Wednesday asked Attorney-General Eric Holder and SEC chairman Mary Schapiro to look into a potential violation of the FCPA. i am only amazed that people are "surprised" by this whole business.
(on the other hand, some members of this forum seem to get all their news - and ideas, to use the term loosely - from fox. ![]() you think he - and his minions - haven't been pulling this stuff over here? for ages?
