Who was it, Dr. Porsche who designed the beetle? Gee, you think he saw one of these or what?

Is this what made Hitler decide he needed to invade Czechoslovakia to get the Tatra plant?

Looks like the handling would be disgustingly vile. Light chassis, long water-cooled lump of an inline engine behind the axle -- there's a reason why Porsche used a boxer and Tatra used a vee.
Maybe this was a gift to Hitler made in the hopes that he'd kill himself. |

Tatra developed the V570 in 1931 as a prototype and then built another one in 1932. They figured out there was no demand for a small car with a rear engine so they developed a big sedan using what they had learned from the small V570. It looked enough like a VW bug to have sparked a lawsuit after the war.
VW is supposed to have paid something to Tatra to settle the matter back then, and Czech auto nuts are quick to point out that if you look at a Tatra V570 you will see a VW Bug and that Dr. Porsche swiped the best parts of the Tatra for his designs for VW and Mercedes. I guess the truth might never be known, but it is an interesting bit of WW 2 that no one has really covered. |

It's the perfect frame for a Meyer's Manx-type dune buggy...

Dr Porsche was the chief engineer at Mercedes between 1923 and 1932 when this car was developed.

I'm pretty sure there was an article in The Star recently which featured one of these.

there's a guy here in los angeles (silverlake echo park) who owns one of these, as well as several tatra v-8 sedans (rear engine, of course) including a restored black one whiich won the car of the year award from the n.y.times sunday weekend auto page last year. his garage is a sight to behold, and a friend of mine brought me along to do drywall repair and paint last year - it was hard to stay focused. (did i mention the vintage indian and the bmw bikes?

Chrysler Airflow
Quote:
Tatra did some nice designs but until Porsche got it right with the 911, most rear engined cars either were underpowered lumps or dangerous to drive (it is said that the Tatra killed more German Officers than the Czech resistance). The development of the Airflow/Star and Chrysler's open door policy to European designers is well covered in "Chrysler-A Man and His Dream". He assumed that there was market share enough for everyone. He was more worried about GM and Ford than MB and Porsche. |

MB and Dr. Porsche must have had a time travel machine in your universe.

The rack and pinion on this looks like it came from a Porsche 914.
