There hasn't been much USSR or Warsaw Pact in the last 20 years or so, either.

Once we have provided for their freedom and opportunity, why should we pay for their continued well-being?

This applies to our own citizens, as well.

His sons and their families have both been detained. Plus he was on the phone to al-Jazeera giving an apology to the workd when gunfire in the other room ended the conversation.

The rebels and Gadhafi's son called back to say he was still alive, but he won't be making any calls for a while, he has lost his phone privileges...

There are already reports of beheadings, torture and other unpleasantness. I don't hold much hope that he won't be replaced by a bunch of crazy jihadis.
