Unless another rescue was impeded, why actually arrest the canoeists? Waste of everyone's time -- check their ID, give a desk appearance ticket for xhrist's sake. Cops probably wasted more time than the "rescue" did.

Definitely stupidity involved and maybe drugs or alcohol. The aftermath of storms can turn to looting, etc if tight control is not enforced. Authorities are overworked without having to babysit fools and idots. Stress is high, tolerance is low.

The shame is that they had to waste the resources to save the fools from their own stupidity.

These guys thought it would be fun to canoe down the street alongside the overflowing Pequabuck River in neighboring Bristol, CT. The guy in front died (The canoeing was dumb enough, not wearing life jackets? Let's just say Darwin's work comes into play).

The guy with the yellow raincoat is giving that boater an earful.
They were arrested because the cops were pissed off. I don't blame them one bit. Not likely anyone else will get in a canoe and paddle down Main Street.

Being out of fresh Krispy Kreme and pissed off isn't an excuse for overreaction. Personally, I'd have been all for the "not rescue" idea ... people should have a RIGHT to do dumb, dangerous things, just not expect others to bail them out.

How is it overreaction? The cops are expected to risk their lives to save this idiot. If they don't, they get into trouble. If they do, you begrudge them getting pissed and citing the moron. Now, if there was a law exempting rescue workers from having to save morons, fair enough. You do realize there were some that refused to move before the storm hit. When it does, there is no law protecting the police from NOT rescuing the morons.

Having been involved in SAR, we used to take everything seriously. You'd be surprised at how many people go hiking even when the weather forcast is for golf ball sized hail.

If someone would have drowned we would never have heard the end of it, the city would be slapped with a big lawsuit, the personnel responsible for safety might have to face review, etc. If there were some kind of emergency elsewhere and you were holding up the rescue crew because you did something stupid you should get more than just a slap on the wrist. Four grown men for goodness sake. You oughtta know better.

And technically it's called a PFD, personal floatation device. Not a life jacket.

Edit: You can never know how the streams are going to flow when a city is flooded like that. There may be a huge storm drain sucking water at tens of thousands CFM right under you. Debris, chemicals spills, sharp objects, all kinds of flotsam and jetsam, etc. You're a freakin' idiot if you think you're just going out for a sunday paddle.

Technically yes. But having grown up on boats surrounded by boaters who call/called them "life jackets" or "life vests" that's going to be a very hard habit for me to ever break.

And a PWC or Personal Watercraft will always be a "Jetski" to me regardless of manufacturer.

Are you going to be the one who plucks their bloated carcasses out of the storm drain that they're blocking up? They were bound to inconvenience someone and cost the taxpayers some expense.

I'm all for that but see post 8. Until you can exempt them from responding to the "Save the moron" calls or at least put them on a low priority, it is going to be tough.

"Clyma said the storm has pretty much blown through when the men decided to put the canoe in the floodwaters. Seaver had had a few beers, but he wasn't drunk, Clyma said.

There was no current, Clyma said. The earlier part of their ill-fated journey was captured by someone taking pictures nearby, and the photo was released by police.

Next thing they knew, they were quickly floating into the rushing waters of the Pequabuck — which a veteran city officer said was the worst he had seen in 33 years on the job.

"We had no intention of getting in the river," Clyma said. "It just happened really fast. Once the water took us, there was nothing we could do."

As the canoe picked up speed, it hit a big tree branch in the water, he said. That knocked them out of the canoe.

The river continued carrying the men downstream, 100 to 150 feet to a bridge, he said.

The water was so high they hit their heads on the bottom of the bridge, he said.

It was dark under there, he said, but he was able to recover.

"I just kind of rode it out. Eventually, I made it out from under the bridge. I saw daylight again," Clyma said.

He didn't know his friend hadn't surfaced. Seaver's body was recovered around 11 p.m. Sunday on the river bank near 190 E. Main St. His body was removed by the state medical examiner for an autopsy; the results weren't available Monday night.

don't save the morons, let them drown. Saving morons only gives the morons opportunity to do more stupid s*** which screws up the world for the rest of us. But, this philosophy is not in keeping with the so-called 'social compact' now, is it?
