Honestly...
Idea to take the 'D' out of PTSD being studied - Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) - Stripes Quote:

Couple of things
- where's the tax money you mention? - if it doesn't qualify as a disorder, why call it a disorder? The APA has guidelines. Sounds like they are simply reviewing whether PTSD counts as a "disorder" or other title

I suffer from it as well, stemming from a tragic house fire in 2007 where I nearly lost my kids. It's always in my mind, and will never change. It is a disorder, as far as I'm concerned. It's a controlled disorder that really affects every fiber of your life.

I know some fellows with PSTD. One is from the Veit-Nam era, one from Iraq and one was at Normandy on D-Day who later retired a General.
The General died recently at 94. He had nightmares until just a few days before he died. The one from the Veit-Nam war just never talks about it, and the Iraq Vet is undergoing treatment now. All of them said that if you ever let it slip that you were having a problem your career was OVER. The Vet from Iraq is not planning on a military career, so he sought treatment. He said it was like hitting a brick wall when it came to getting help. He found that just because the Commander in Chief tells the Army to do something it is up to the people that have the power to make it happen. You never know when being on a first name basis with a Senator AND a Congressman will come in handy, but after a few phone calls things started to move pretty quick for the Iraq Vet. Just the word.... Disorder. If you have one of any type then you are not tough enough for the US Army. That may be sad, but from what I have seen first hand it is true. |

And........
If it takes spending tax money to care for and hopefully cure our Vets then I would consider it money well spent. If you knew how much it cost to treat this 'Disorder' then you would, too. Any money spent working on this is all just a part of the cost of the war. If Rumsfeld did not take these costs into consideration when this thing started then that is his fault and not the fault of anyone in office today. |

There is no "Cure" for it. The best thing out there for it is to get it out in the open and learn to live with it.

If the intent is to get the help to the servicemen that could use it, then call it whatever you like. Shouldn't cost us money to change nomenclature.... more stupid bureaucracy

I really doubt there would be a wholesale and overnight change. It would be phased in as old materials and books were replaced. The cost of doing it this way would be zero.
I was once given a project of changing the signage on 3,600 company owned service stations. The cost was in the tens of millions. I told the marketing people that as old signage wore out the new logos would be phased in. That was 36 years ago and there are still some of the old signs out there. Cost? Zero. |
