The all new Tesla Brick

This seems like it might be the type of thing you'd wanna know about:

Bricking a Tesla

Interesting issues on many levels.

Yep, not unlike an old lap top is it?

I could not help but laugh at some of the circumstance that led to the "bricks". I know that's terrible because these owners were probably completely unsuspecting. (Particularly the person with the extension cord) It's the gall of Tesla to offer little if any assistance to the owners in these circumstance that gets to me....

I guess that rules out the Tesla to be an exciting "barn find" in the future.

Or a new laptop. Try discharging your laptop's lithium battery to 0% and leaving it for a while.. good chance the battery will be toast, or have permanent loss of capacity!

I'm sure there's a retrofit with Volt batteries and a generous subsidy from Obama.

One of the many reasons why I continue to refuse Tesla as an employer...

Might be Tesla babysitting services sprout up someday. Guaranteed fully charged batteries during longish vacations.

There is a lovely red tesla that I see parke on the streets of Lafayette when I walk out to lunch. I always wonder what sort of person would spend that kind of money for a car that looks so bloody fast (and may be for a short distance) but has such a limited range.

a wannabe greenie.the only electric car i will ever drive is one that once moving creates it's own power to run the motor.thus a somewhat perpetual car.tell me it can be done.oh wait then we couldn't sell gas,so it's probably already been done but GM bought the patent and threw everything in the local landfill.happened with fuel/air injectors.

Unfortunately for current and future Tesla owners who encounter this problem, it’s also not covered by normal automobile insurance policies. This makes the situation almost unique in modern car-ownership: a $40,000 or more exposure that cannot be insured. After all, car insurance is designed to protect owners and drivers even when they are neglectful or at fault. The affected customers probably would have been in a better financial situation if they’d accidentally rolled their Teslas off a cliff, as insurance would generally cover much of those costs.
Ah, so if the owner were to roll the car off a cliff, they could...

oh, wait...

After battery death, the car is completely inoperable. At least in the case of the Tesla Roadster, it’s not even possible to enable tow mode, meaning the wheels will not turn and the vehicle cannot be pushed nor transported to a repair facility by traditional means.
Yep, that's a brick. It's a pretty brick, though.

I wonder what's the idle drain of the Tesla -- I'd be surprised if it were more than 10 watts, which any extension cord should be able to pass.

True, but I'd bet the sophisticated charger on the thing checks to see what current is available for charging, not what the system is using...and if the potential current load isn't available, it won't even start the charging cycle, no matter how little might be needed to maintain the state.

I guess the only solution at that point would be a car-be-que . . . Let's see if there is a spike in the number of car fire claims to insurance companies from drivers of electric cars in the near future.

So much for being Green! Like Kermit says, "It's not easy being green . . . "
